Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra

Community Engagement Intern

June - August 2018 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

This position allowed me to interact with the Ann Arbor and Southeast Michigan community. I was able to engaged citizens of all ages. I ran Instrument Petting Zoos across Ann Arbor and the surrounding area. This allowed me to help children, teens, and adults learn how to play instruments that they had never tried before. It was a very rewarding process and I enjoyed being able to be out in the community creating a welcoming environment full of smiles and laughs all through sharing a love for music. I was also able to do office work for the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra which allowed me to learn more about what it takes to run an amazing non-profit locally based symphony orchestra. I learned about orchestra librarianship and library processes, marketing, and production.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been summer concerts. There were smaller chamber performances, but I would have loved to intern during a time where there were main-stage concerts happening as well.

Don't be afraid to speak up about your interests! When I applied for this internship I said that I was interested in the Community Engagement aspect, but also wanted to learn about orchestra librarianship, marketing, and production. By speaking up about my interests, the symphony formed the perfect internship opportunity for me where I was able to explore everything I was interested in.
