Axalta Coating Systems

R&D Intern

May - August 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

Excellent autonomy as an intern. Trusted to work on real projects and present your work to professionals. The annual internship summit is a worthwhile networking opportunity to meet higher management and other interns from across the US.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more conversations with HR about full-time opportunities. Networking opportunities for young professionals and mentorship programs are still being developed.

Advice

Intern retention is very dependent on job function so choose wisely when selecting an internship field.

Research and Development Chemist

May - August 2019 • Mount Clemens, MI

What I liked

The people that work for Axalta in MI are warm, talented, and very supportive. I was supported throughout the summer and had an incredible experience traveling to Philadelphia to see the company headquarters.

What I wish was different

I wish I would’ve had more information about the area to which I relocated before moving.

Advice

Be open to knowing very little at first—paint is mysterious but cool subject to study, and Axalta is an incredible place to learn as a young scientist and a young professional.

Data Analytics Intern

May - August 2019 • Mount Clemens, MI

What I liked

I liked being able to learn about Data Analytics in the real world in addition to getting the opportunity to travel for the company and meeting people from all over the world

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more specific and attainable projects for me to conquer during my time there.

Advice

If anyone were to take this same job, I would say to ask a lot of questions. Being bold and confident can set you apart from the competition.

procurement intern

May - August 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed having my own project to complete and working in center city.

What I wish was different

I wish my boss had been more helpful and given me different kinds of work to do.

Advice

I would suggest to be a part of as many projects as possible because you are not given enough work for the entire summer.

Corporate Affairs Intern

May - August 2018 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I got to do real work and was able to learn a lot of new skills from my boss/mentor ranging from Mailchimp to running a corporate website. There were also weekly "leadership learns" where one of the executives at the company would talk to the interns for an hour about what they do and answer any questions. There is also a summit where you get to meet all the interns from all sites, and learn about yourself, your leadership style, and how to work within a group of interns from all kinds of backgrounds

What I wish was different

I wish they were a little more flexible with hours. You are only allowed to work 40 a week and will not get paid for any overtime (they sometimes make you leave early on Friday if you came in early or left late throughout the week).

Advice

don't be afraid to intern in an industry you know nothing about. It's fun to learn new things and meet different people.

Process Technology and Operations Intern

May - August 2017 • Front Royal, VA

What I liked

It was a very hands on position and I got to work on projects that actually affected the business. I got to go to the global headquarters in Philadelphia for a week with all the other interns and meet the CEO and other senior leadership. I got to present my projects to the Vice President. I got to work with all ranges of people from the Vice President to the operators in the plant which was a really great experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a mentor with more experience in my exact projects.

Advice

Hit the ground running early, ask for advice from other engineers, be curious about what big things are going on in the plant, think outside the box for your projects.
