Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana

Operations Analyst Intern

August - December 2023 • New Orleans, LA

What I liked

The atmosphere of the intern cohort was quite diverse, with people of all backgrounds and schools all over Louisiana. My team was excellent to work with, and as an organization, they are very sensitive to interns being full-time students during the semester. I highly recommend them, as they are flexible and listen to their interns about what type of experience they want to gain.

Human Resources Intern

June 2021 • Baton Rouge, LA

What I liked

I love the culture and inclusivity here. Having the opportunity to work from home and build my work schedule around my class schedule makes it so that I don't miss out on fun activities and critical teaching moments. No matter the industry you work in here, you are sure to be met with genuine professionals who make it a priority to invest in and develop rising talent. The Generation Blue internship program here at BCBSLA grants hands-on, valuable experience that allows early professionals to be the most well-rounded candidate possible. Experience at a company of this size and stature ensures that interns gain a wide variety of skills and technologies that can be applied to any future endeavors. After interning here, I feel empowered to go far in my career with a confidence that I had not experienced before. I have been introduced to an incredibly supportive network here at BCBSLA and I'm proud to say that it all started with Gen Blue!

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change a thing about my experience with the Generation Blue internship program at BCBSLA. The program provided me with invaluable experience and guidance, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity.

Advice

My best advice is that everywhere you go, you are your biggest advocate. Don't be afraid to be open and vocal about where you want to take your career, what you want to learn more of, and even what you might be struggling with at school or on the job. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn and grow, and take the initiative to ask questions and build relationships. Your team truly wants to see you succeed and will do what it takes to get you where you want to go.

Talent Acquisition Intern

August 2022 • Baton Rouge, LA

What I liked

Through my internship with BCBSLA, I liked the flexibility of it. I was able to choose my schedule and only worked on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays due to school. I also mostly worked remotely, which was very accommodating to my schedule. Yet, even though the internship was mostly remote, I would still attend career fairs and other recruitment events in-person. I was able to learn a lot from this internship and complete projects in the way that I wanted to. I was able to manage some projects on my own, do some things that may not have directly related to the internship but that I was interested in, and just observe other things being completed. Also, the work culture at BCBSLA made the internship an even better experience. I was assigned a buddy at the beginning of the cohort that helped me throughout my internship and I had meetings with my manager weekly. We would do work lunches, and I felt like I could really message anyone from talent acquisition with a question and immediately receive help.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a way for all of the interns to spend more time together in-person. Other than that, there is nothing I would change!

Advice

Communicate with your manager what you are looking to get out of the internship. Tell them how you work best, what things you are most interested in, what you are looking to improve at, etc. A manager wants you to succeed in an internship just as much as you do!

Healthcare Analytics Intern

June 2020 • Metairie, LA

What I liked

The internship went fully remote when covid hit, so that demonstrated to me that the company was flexible and gave me the impression that they valued their interns. I love the team-based work environment and professional development training. I also like that they want you to actually contribute to real projects and improve your skills so you're not just doing busy or clerical work. They also frequently hire interns and I've been able to extend my internship into the next semester, which has been really great.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had more opportunities to get to know each other informally because you don't get as much of that interaction when you're remote, but I think that may be changing in the future. This fully-remote work environment is new to a lot of people. I also had some issues getting access to everything I needed at the beginning, which slowed down my ability to start working on projects, so a smoother process for that would be better.

Advice

SQL and Python are used the most, so I would try to have some experience with those languages before this internship.

Compliance Intern

January - May 2020 • Baton Rouge, LA

What I liked

I liked being able to get an in-depth overview of the health care industry. Learning about the various laws and regulations that affect Blue Cross was great experience for me. Also, I was able to apply a lot of what I learned in school to my internship.

What I wish was different

There is nothing that I wish was different about my internship. It was a great experience and I enjoyed working with everyone in the Compliance and Ethics Department.

Advice

Be willing to learn and be available to help co-workers with tasks. I was able to work on many different projects throughout my internship and they all helped me gain more knowledge of the healthcare industry.

Community Relations Intern

August 2018 • Lafayette, LA

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to learn about the work of non-profits across the state of Louisiana. I did not realize how much they do to improve the communities that they serve. Also, I was able to attend a lot of different events that non-profits hosted, which was great for networking.

What I wish was different

There isn't one thing that I would want to be different during my internship. I enjoyed working with the Community Relations team at Blue Cross and learning from them.

Advice

I would suggest to attend every event that you can. Also, work hard and be willing to learn during the internship.
