Blue Shield of California

Corporate Law Intern

June - August 2021 • Oakland, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the multifaceted nature of the internship. I had the opportunity to work with various groups within the organization and network across teams. The internship program was also well thought out and organized, as we had the chance to gain leadership/management skills, meet with executives, and present a final presentation to fellow interns.

What I wish was different

It was remote, and I wish it had been in person, but overall it was a great experience.

Advice

Be open to any and all opportunities. Always say yes.

Creative Communications Intern (Video Specialist)

June - August 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

1. Autonomy to create - I was given a lot of autonomy to create for the company within the branding guidelines. 2. Networking opportunities - I had the chance to meet and talk with approximately 70 + people during the 3 months I was at BSCA. People are extremely open to cold turkey emailing and helping out interns & people are extremely friendly in general. 3. Work-life balance - no one's in the office on Fridays. Working from home is not discouraged :-)

What I wish was different

I wish I had a little more guidance from my manager with creative direction.

Advice

I found out that I got my offer on my flight back home for another (less favorable) internship in May. Don't give up on your internship search :-)

Market Strategy Intern

June - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The company treated their employees (interns included) well. There is a lot of respect, kindness, and open arms to welcome any questions and concerns. The interns also get to know each other really well and form great friendships. You are brought onto the job because the team already had a project in mind that needs help, so you will get to have at least one substantial contribution.

What I wish was different

I wished there was more interaction with high-level leadership, more responsibilities/tasks to handle, and more professional conversations to join in on. Also wished there were more in-person interactions as most of my project-development and meetings were mostly virtual.

Advice

Healthcare is an industry that anyone can pursue (IT, finance, creative arts, etc) as evident through all the different talents in my intern class. A big company like BSC can offer a good first exposure to this industry in terms of the payer (insurance) side!

Claims Data Analyst

June - August 2018 • Lodi, CA

What I liked

Loved the guidance I received from my superiors, as well as the incredible opportunity to work with professionals in my field of study.

What I wish was different

Everything was perfect about the internship, but I wish the location would have been closer to home. Nevertheless, I had an amazing summer in a new small town.

Advice

Be curious and show that you care!! If the employer took a chance on you, you should do whatever you can to make your and their time worth it.
