What I liked

It was a bootcamp, so I got to learn a lot. I really liked the different workshops and community bonding activities.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had more time to develop independent projects using the machines that we trained on.

Advice

From this experience, I wish I was more open with different machines. I didn't realize towards the end that I liked certain machines that intimidated me at the beginning. I advise others to be open about learning as much as they can.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

July - August 2022 • Chestnut Hill, MA

What I liked

I liked that the hours were flexible - you could work however much and whenever you wanted as long as you finished the weekly tasks your supervising Professor assigned to you.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more chances to talk with other undergrad research assistants and compare experiences.

Advice

Communicate with your professor. Don’t be afraid to mention during weekly meetings if you got stuck on a problem, and around the three week mark if the research topic is not piquing your interest, tell that to the professor.

Physical Chemistry Researcher

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to get hands on experience in physical chemistry which is something I am considering specializing in during graduate school.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more oversight and direct interaction with the head of my lab group instead of just working with the graduate student.

Advice

Always chase down every opportunity. Don't just passively wait for something to fall in your lap. This goes for both finding career/internship/research opportunities and for when you actually land the job. There will be times where you have to choose between staying in and watching Netflix, or going out and attending that educational seminar or career/grad prep workshop. Always choose the unique opportunities.

What I liked

Free education. Cool city and environment.

What I wish was different

The department was more organized. More guidance for teaching.

Advice

More freedom with Master's programs can be good or bad depending on how you use that time. Don't fall into the trap of becoming unproductive.
