Boston Consulting Group (BCG)

Summer Associate

June - August 2023 • Miami, FL

What I liked

Fantastic group of intelligent, driven people. Overall excellent management and frequent feedback. This job allowed me to grow professionally at a rapid rate.

What I wish was different

Basically nothing—I accepted my return offer immediately and am looking forward to returning.

Advice

Network as much as possible while in the role—senior BCGers are happy to speak with summer interns and offer lots of wisdom. I would also say the most important skill in the job is efficiency over perfection. It is better to iterate several times and prioritize speed to output rather than trying to produce a perfect first pass at an assignment.

What I liked

I loved the community of both interns and consultants who worked at the company. Everyone was very nice and helpful in developing my network and skills.

What I wish was different

I wish I had worked on more technical skills that could be applied to other projects and/or jobs outside of consulting.

Advice

Network as much as possible! Working at this company surrounds you with an amazing group of smart, talented, and dedicated individuals from a variety of backgrounds. Talking to many people helps you realize how many unique opportunities this company offers and where it can take your career.

What I liked

Great experience. Great people. Firm treated everyone really well

What I wish was different

Not too much. Some personalities are tough to work with. Also, did not get to do that much thinking / strategy due to nature of case

Consulting Analyst Intern

June - August 2021 • Summit, NJ

What I liked

The work culture was amazing. Despite limitations due to COVID, BCG still made an effort to hold as many in person events as possible including dinners and boat activities. Furthermore, everyone on the job was extremely helpful whenever a question was asked and a strong emphasis was placed on making you feel welcome and comfortable.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more in person opportunities to meet people - but this was a result of COVID limitations.

Advice

Take advantage of every event and opportunity presented. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make sure to maximize your learning experience.

Summer Associate

June - August 2021 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Extremely intelligent peers and coworkers; significant emphasis on feedback, which fostered enhanced learning and development; fast-paced environment; work as an intern is directly client-facing

What I wish was different

The only qualm I had was the intensity and demand of the workflow; none of it is required, but to perform at a certain level long hours are expected

Advice

Go in without expectations and you will be rewarded, they want to help develop you just as much as you want to learn. Do not silo yourself into a specific industry or specialization too quick, there are myriad opportunities to get involved in myriad industries and sectors, and you have the ability to pursue your own interests with a level of autonomy not offered elsewhere

Case Team Assistant

May - June 2019 • Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

What I liked

(1) I appreciated the professional working environment. We were working in a team of around 10 people. All of my teammates were smart people who graduated from top universities worldwide. The team was also diverse as we had members coming from other BCG branches. The team was working very professionally. Everyone treated their tasks very seriously -- always delivered them on time. The tasks were assigned logically and evenly. My direct "manager," even though was busy with her tasks, still gave me guidance and support throughout the process (as I was totally new to the company). I also got to meet our client in meetings, which taught me a lot about being professional. (2) BCG paid well and treated their employees well. Salaries at BCG, of course, are among the highest. They also provided budgets for necessary daily expenses and other work-related ones. I only needed to focus on working hard. The company also organized weekly bonding activities that CTAs can also join. The team also had some cozy get-together celebrations as we reached each milestone. At the end of the case, each CTA received a short personal reflection and feedback section, which I really appreciated. We also received small gifts and farewell cards from our teammates/managers.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time working there. My case was only one-month long, which was, to me, a bit short. However, one month at BCG taught me more than I could ever imagine.

Advice

From my own experience, the responsibility of a case team assistant varies depending on each case. However, in general, the assistant needs to be flexible -- being able to do many tasks like researching, cold-calling, translating, cleaning/analyzing data, creating Powerpoint slides, using Tableau, or even other administrative tasks like arranging meeting rooms, etc. The assistant should also adopt the say-yes attitude as well as a professional manner.

Associate

June - September 2018 • Denver, CO

What I liked

BCG gave me the best mentorship and transparent feedback that I’ve had at any company. I spent my summer on a pro bono project to improve Denver and got to work directly with CEOs and other executives from our client companies. My team was a bit unconventional, just me and a Principal, but he was an incredible mentor and I learned so much, especially coming in with zero Excel experience. The office was tight-knit and they planned great events for the interns pretty much weekly.
