Lots of resources to use, industry professionals to work with, and liberty to drive research down paths that I find interesting

What I wish was different

Great as it was, nothing should be changed

Research Assistant

February 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to do research. I was allowed to search for answers and solutions on my own rather than relying on the professors.

What I wish was different

I would have preferred to research a different subject but it was still a good experience.

Advice

I would recommend trying to solve problems without relying on the professors, not only is it a good way to learn but you'll gain experiences that you can share in interviews in the future.

Especially For Youth Counselor

May - August 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I loved that I was able to work with youth all summer and teach them more about faith. It was so fun to be able to party with them and then go straight into a more spiritual side application!

What I wish was different

I honestly can’t think of anything I would do differently. It was exhausting, but all the hours that I put in are necessary in order for things to go smoothly and to provide the youth the best experience they can have.

Advice

The counselors that work at this camp (since it is a more faith based camp), are required to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to teach the kids more effectively. So I highly recommend everyone that is a member of that church to look more into this job, especially if you enjoy hanging out with kids! It’s honestly a life changing experience!

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May 2017 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I liked that it was hands-on and mentored, so I could progress at my own pace.

What I wish was different

I wish I had started earlier! It would have been awesome to be in this lab for another year before I started.

Advice

Talk to your professors on campus - they can get you involved in research that helps you learn more information more effectively than a class does.

Greater employee and customer respect. I felt like there was a great sense of favoritism played among employees.

Student Programmer

May 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I learned a lot about Linux command line, Apache, Drupal 8, and other softwares.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have done more development, but there wasn't much opportunity for that. I felt like I was doing more content management with Drupal, but I still learned a ton with Linux command line.

Research Assistant

May 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

Even though I did not get an "internship" my research experience has significantly diversified my portfolio and allowed me to learn many of the skills I would have learned at an internship. I was able to make some new friends and I feel confident I can walk up to a hiring manager and tell them about all the great things I've accomplished in this position.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been a little more prepared for "general" engineering. Sometimes all kinds of engineering blend together and, were it not for this experience, I would have felt completely unprepared to tackle problems that were not specifically chemical-engineer related in a professional career.

Advice

There are lots of different types of research. I am not talking about research subjects, but moreso how one actually accomplishes their research. I'd recommend trying at least 2 different types so you know what you like and what you don't.

Economic Research Assistant

April 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

Doing something more applied than just the theory we learn in economics classes. I also enjoyed being able to have a more personal relationship with my professor.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have started a project rather than joining at the tail end of the project. There was a lot of stuff I had to learn about the project before I could even start helping with it. I also wish there was a more structured way for me to learn the coding I needed to know to do the research.

Advice

It's great experience and looks great on a resume to be comfortable with data science/analysis and experience with python.

Accounting Clerk

May 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I liked the challenges brought throughout the job. Since we were in charge of the accounting for the McKay School, we often had to work with other to manage budgets, accounts, and expenses.

What I wish was different

The former employees left suddenly before I started, so I didn't have anyone to train me for the job. Although it took some time, I was able to learn how to successfully complete my job.

Advice

I would say that asking questions is key. When you don't know how to do something, then you must learn from others. It takes a lot more time to work through it by yourself then to learn from others.
