Bonner Intern

June 2018 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

I got to pitch my ideas and see through projects that I had suggested.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish had been different would be the amount of supervision. However, I learned to be more self-reliant and I became more confident in my abilities to contribute to the program because of the way the internship was structured.

Advice

Don't be afraid to share your ideas. Speaking up and suggesting a project I thought would be beneficial gave me the opportunity to work on a project I really cared about.

Student Research

May - June 2018 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

It was an unique experience and I got to learn a lot. As a freshman, I got to dive deep in concepts of economics and work with the professor to create an economic model that is applicable in the real world.

What I wish was different

It would have been better for me if I was completely knowledgeable about all the platforms for coding instead of having to learn it while working. However, these skills turned out to be some things i also got out of this experience so I am extremely thankful.

Advice

Always keep an eye out for opportunities and dive into them with a keen desire to fully immerse yourself and always be ready to learn.

IT assistant

June - August 2020 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

I really liked the opportunity to learn more about computer systems in the IT world. It gave me a chance to broaden my knowledge of computer systems and to get basic skills to be able to better cope in the technology-dominated world.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more hours to work during the summer but because of the covid crisis that hit the world my hours were limited. It was extremely hard dealing with things during covid due to a number of restrictions and regulations. I did eventually get used to the new covid regulations and since the work was in IT I was able to adapt myself better to the technology world

Advice

come with an open mind if you wish and not assume that you know everything. there were so many new things that I discovered whilst working in the IT department. There should also be that determination to waking up early and going back late. It will seem hard at first but it is in reality preparation for how the real world will be like.

Student Researcher

June 2018 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

The research I did this summer helped me develop my research skills, as well as improve my field skills for future endeavors. I also enjoyed getting to work with a small group of peers and faculty during my summer research. Finally I valued the opportunity to get off campus and engage more with the local community.

What I wish was different

I wish that this research project would have been longer!

Advice

This research experience encouraged us to be self-guided and independent, while this is a great way to develop skills, at some moments I had to ask for some help to ensure I was moving in the right direction. The faculty are great at helping out, so never hesitate to reach out for clarifications or guidance!

Theatre Arts Researcher

May 2018 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

Being able to learn what goes on in the pre-production process and finding new ways to encourage diversity in the theater was enjoyable for me. It showed me how to put my love for theatre into practical use.

What I wish was different

Nothing stood out to me as annoying or troublesome during this research. I cannot think of anything that I would have liked to be done differently.

Advice

Often times, school teaches us how to think about solutions to large-scale problems, but this research project pushed us to carry these solutions out. There were several moments when I was pulled out of my comfort zone and it can be daunting, but as long as you remember that your thoughts matter, you will have accomplished something amazing.

Biochemistry Intern

May - July 2018 • Richmond, IN

What I liked

Since it was my first time doing research, the experience was very eye-opening for me. I learn that doing research is exciting and demanding. We need to dedicate our time and attention to what was going on in the lab 100% of the time.

What I wish was different

I wish that the summer research could have lasted longer. Even though we're still doing the research in the semester, there isn't nearly enough time as the number of continuous hours we spent on research in the summer.

Advice

Talk to your mentor and try to look up background information about the topic before starting. The first few weeks of the research will be really slow and include a lot of reading and looking things up. You can boost the speed of the process by having some idea of what is going on in lab.
