What I liked

I love being involved in the John Carroll sports community. It gives me the opportunity to build connections and experience in sports management.

What I wish was different

I wish I had joined sooner than my sophomore year, however I am going to make the most of the opportunity I have.

Advice

I would recommend to stay involved as much as possible with the job. It may be stressful at times, but it is valuable experience that you won't receive anywhere else.

I loved the people I worked with as well as the social element of my job. I enjoyed interacting with incoming freshman and getting them excited about JCU.

What I wish was different

I wish that we could have been in person, but with COVID unfortunately we had to be remote.

I would share that confidence in this role is key, and if you don't know the answer to a question, be honest and follow up.

JCU Work Force

What I liked

Consistent 40 hours a week plus overtime occasionally. My boss was great and very intentional about making it a good Summer for us. The work day was different every day which made it more desirable to go to work everyday.

What I wish was different

I wish we had better collaboration with other departments when working together to achieve certain tasks. It was difficult to work with people that felt entitled to not work sometimes.

Advice

Be ready work hard, helping John Carroll University and all those who could need assistance in any way. This can be tough work but very rewarding if you work hard. It was a fun Summer on campus and making new friends.

The working environment and strengthening of my communication and time management skills.

The compensation method. Throughout the summer, you do receive housing, but not an hourly or monthly stipend.

Advice

Be adaptable, it is a low-action work environment with great people. Visit the RA's on duty and be ready to help whenever needed.

Reunion Weekend Leader

What I liked

I liked being able to lead a team with another leader by my side. I appreciated the uplifting and awesome atmosphere. Working with Alumni Relations at John Carroll was a great way to network with alumni and strengthen my knowledge of campus resources.

What I wish was different

A bigger workspace.

Advice

Set reminders for yourself for updating forms, learning names for the students you will be guiding that weekend, and be prepared for long workdays leading up to the event. It's a wonderful experience and I recommend it for anyone going into event planning and customer service experience!

Help Desk student Technician

What I liked

Easy Scheduling, Good pay, Good people, Similar job as the helpdesk during the school year. Got to meet a lot of people.

What I wish was different

I wish we would have gotten more admin jobs to do. Towards the end of the summer I got to do more of what I wanted, but for a lot of the summer it was just busy work.

Advice

It is a good job and I do recommend it. Speak to John Mack in IT if you are interested. You will get to practice a lot of tech skills.

Web Development and Digital Media Intern

What I liked

Comfortable, relaxing, and engaging work environment. Many different tasks that keep the job interesting and interactive, as well as a flexible schedule.

What I wish was different

I hope to see more marketing tasks that relate to graphic design and digital advertising in my future days with JCU IMC.

Advice

A major benefit to finding an internship on campus is that the schedule is much more flexible with colleagues being more understanding of your class schedule, as well as less travel time allowing you to work more hours.
