What I liked

I was able to get a lot of great hands on experience to important projects and was exposed to a multitude of different softwares and was even able to become extremely proficient in excel and matlab

What I wish was different

The hours we're a little less than ideal, having to start at 5AM really put a damper on my summer. Also at some instances my manager and coworkers lack work to give me.

Advice

Work hard and be proactive and you will be rewarded because someone will notice even when you seem like no one will.

Global Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2019 • Redondo Beach, CA

What I liked

In my internship I was given a lot of freedom to learn about the things within my department that most interested me, and to work on projects that I felt were important. I liked having the independence to choose my own work and not always needing to check in with someone. I was able to learn a broad variety of skills because of the freedom I was given to work with everyone on the team at different points.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunity to connect and work with other interns in my field. There was only one other intern in my department, and we chatted sometimes but our work was always different. The company hosted a lot of events for interns to mingle and connect, however I wanted to connect more at work rather than outside of work. While I loved the freedom of my role, it would have been valuable to work with other interns on an ongoing project or goal potentially.

Advice

Go into the experience with an open mind. No matter what role you are in for an internship, there is always so much to learn and explore. Everyone in the company is very friendly and most people have open-door policies. I gained so much just from emailing managers in other departments and having meetings with them to learn more about the company and where I best fit. So much room for growth and leadership.

Digital Technology/Software Intern

May - August 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

Interning at Northrop Grumman was an incredible experience. The company had various networking events for interns where I was able to build a strong network of interns, NGC employees, and NGC executives. The work had real value and I got to see the ripple effect my work had on my team. The emphasis was on learning and lead engineers were always willing to lend advice or answer any project questions. Lastly, the emphasis on diversity and inclusion was incredible. I always felt like my voice was heard and considered in all meetings I attended.

What I wish was different

I personally wasn't able to get any lab work which is an experience I wish I had however, the project I was on was still in the preliminary design phase.

Advice

Speak up! A lot of interns don't think they have a voice however, what we are learning in school a lot of full time engineers did not as our industry is constantly growing. The engineers always value the different perspectives current students bring to solving real world problems.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June - September 2018 • Northridge, CA

What I liked

I liked the projects/tasks that were assigned to me because they were both interesting and challenging. Everyone there was also super nice and willing to help me with any questions I had. There were also intern events that were fun like go-kart racing and bowling.

What I wish was different

I wish they gave me more things to work on because there were times where I finished everything and had nothing to do.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions. Not only do they encourage it, but you would also be saving a lot of time because you don't want to be stuck on something for hours when someone could help you get through it within minutes.

What I liked

Great experience on the manufacturing floor . Very friendly and welcoming coworkers, and were very helpful with any questions I had.

Mechanical Design Intern

June - September 2017 • Northridge, CA

What I liked

As an intern at Orbital ATK, I really felt like I was an important part of the team. If I wasn't there, other full time engineers would be doing the work that I did over the summer. I got to do a lot of 3D modeling using PTC Creo as well as create prototypes of models using the 3D printers in the office. Everyone on the mechanical design team was very welcoming and happy to help me.

What I wish was different

I would not change anything about my internship experience.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Everyone will be excited to teach you about what they're working on or help you with anything you might need. You will get the most out of your internship if you ask a lot of questions and talk to full time employees.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Dulles, VA

What I liked

I liked the engaging hands on work experience. The people I worked with were also helpful and encouraging. It was also nice to go to free events and hear an astronaut give a speech for the intern speaker series.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been tasked with more open ended work that was more engineering specific instead of desk work. The hands on work I was given was great, I would have just liked more of it.

Advice

Meet as many people as you can and become friends with older people in the company because they are your connections and can steer you into the right directions to help find what you are interested in.
