RTX (formerly Raytheon Technologies)

Systems/ software engineer

May - August 2023 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

The work- life balance; The staff itself, never made me feel like i was intern working there. And the fact that we worked on the real time projects with the teams itself.

What I wish was different

May be the location, but it was really nice to be in Iowa for a little while. Away from all the hustle.

Advice

Please try to attend as many career oriented events. Tablings are really helpful sometimes. They give you all the information and also sometimes proof reads your resumes.

software engineer intern

June - August 2022 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

Flexibility, good WLB, relocation package and bonus, paid holidays, 120 hours of PTO, internal store with discounts on apparel, travel, entertainment etc

What I wish was different

Did not get assigned a seat on site, 90% hybrid even though they paid for relocation. Entire job could have been done at home with mailed assets. Slow work some weeks.

Advice

Great opportunity to learn about a cool field and build some technical and social skills. Great industry with recession proof projects and great benefits and WLB.

Program Quality Intern

May - August 2022 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

Very supportive network allowed me to improve engineering and communication skills. Many opportunities to learn about different rolls and programs within Raytheon.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gone in person to the office more often. Hybrid work is enjoyable at times but isn't as good an experience as in person.

Advice

You get out of the experience what you put into it.

During my time at Raytheon, I was very grateful for the mentor I was given during my internship. They always encouraged asking questions and challenged me with different assignments following my training. The onboarding process was very smooth as well.

Tax Technology Intern

January - August 2021 • Farmington, CT

What I liked

I liked that I got a lot of exposure to different platforms and got to improve on my technical skills with Excel and other softwares.

What I wish was different

When I was initially given a description of this internship, I was told that it was finance based. Instead, I was surprised to hear that it was more focused on accounting. Nevertheless, it was a good learning experience.

Advice

I would say that you need to be very proactive when it comes to completing tasks on this team. No one will come to you saying they need you to work on anything. Instead, you have to make sure to ask where you can be of assistance.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Richardson, TX

What I liked

There are tons of programs at Raytheon! Specifically regarding software engineering, you can work on virtually any field you like: cloud, security, front/back/full stack development, AI/ML, data, testing, etc. I love that availability of options Also, the people and team I worked with were incredible. They were available to assist and help all the time, and I learned so much from them!

What I wish was different

The variability of communication mediums. There were many: Teams, Skype, email, a chat platform for our program, zoom, and some others I can't think of. I think they've already been on top of this as of late, but reducing the amount of mediums of communication will lead to more uniformity.

Advice

Often it can be daunting to ask questions, especially if you are young in your career. My take on what I've learned so far: ask away AFTER you have done some digging yourself. You want to inform yourself on your problem the best you can, explain your situation the best you can; asking more informed questions leads to better help from your team!

Systems Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • El Segundo, CA

What I liked

I had the opportunity to explore multiple fields from my systems engineering projects to also working in one of the advanced manufacturing labs where I grew my knowledge in additive manufacturing.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to go into the office more and network with other interns and employees. This was not Raytheon's fault as my internship was at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Advice

Reach out to people and departments you are interested in and explore other fields and opportunities.

Program Management Intern

June 2019 • Burlington, MA

What I liked

I like the culture at Raytheon. I was reminded every day about how the work I was doing was supporting our troops and national security. Raytheon also puts in a lot of resources for anyone to feel a part of something. With their many diverse employee resource groups and continual training, it’s impossible to not grow your network and skills.

What I wish was different

I wish that could travel more without a security clearance. As an intern, Raytheon may not sponsor you for a security clearance. Unfortunately, my programs included a lot of travel to military bases that I could not go to without a clearance, so I had to stay at the office during those days.

Advice

Always carry around a notebook, or something that you can write notes in. In any fast paced environment like Raytheon, a lot of information is moved around quickly and it can be easy to miscommunicate or miss an action item. Also, writing notes can show that you respect what someone is saying and that you are organized enough to do what they may be asking.

TechStudent-Senior

June - August 2020 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

I liked that I could learn something different in the work environment than I would in a regular classroom setting. I felt like I learned a lot from my internship, not just what I needed for my project, but also other employees who work for the company that work outside the department I worked in.

What I wish was different

I wish I could meet other interns in person, but with COVID that wasn't possible. In addition, my supervisor could've had points of contacts ready for us interns when we had an issue.

Advice

I would say that one needs to ask questions and get good answers in return. One shouldn't get one-word answers such as yes or no when you ask a technical question.

Digital Technology Leadership Program Intern

June - August 2020 • Farmington, CT

What I liked

As an intern, I was sent to the head of the PMO within the Infrastructure Services Department. So, they wanted us to have direct collaboration with the leaders of the various departments. I was treated like a real employee instead of an intern. I was put on real projects that had meaningful effect on the way the PMO was run and I also learned so much about software and hardware project lifecycles within a major corporation.

What I wish was different

I obviously wish it was in person because it was remote due to covid. I was still able to make strong connections through zoom meetings but it takes more of an effort to set up meetings and go out of your way to make connections when it is virtual.

Advice

Always be open to learning! Be open to different departments and different roles especially during internship experiences because you never really know what you want to do! Although I don't necessarily want to work in project management in the future, it was such a great learning experience to see the project lifecycle from a birds eye view and now I will be a better software engineer because of it.

Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2020 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

It was very impressive and appreciated that Raytheon kept and adapted the intern program during the pandemic. Even going online, Raytheon still gave me REAL work that a full time associate would be responsible for. As a supply chain intern on a project management team, I was able to practice direct communication with suppliers and other internal stakeholders. My fellow interns also expressed that they were being engaged in critical, engaging projects that were impacting the business. This was a very unique and valuable experience as most internships give you busy work or you’re bored half the time. Everyone I worked with was insightful and wanted to not only get to know you, but help you get to know the company overall because it is a very large organization.

What I wish was different

Financials for housing relocation we’re very generous, but it would have been helpful to have a guide for short term rentals.

Advice

In the online environment, make the most of opportunities to network by reaching out to young professionals in positions that may interest you. Not only will you get to hear about the day to day of a future full time position, but you’ll be on their radar if they hear of any openings.
