Refugee Services of Texas

Faith & Community Engagement Intern

May - August 2021 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I liked worked directly with the refugees, setting up their homes, picking them up from the airport, and providing food for the food insecure and immobile.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have stayed longer and done more with the non-profit.

Advice

Go into the experience open minded and flexible to ensure you are not disappointed and can serve the non-profit well.

Refugee Services Intern

May - July 2018 • Amarillo, TX

What I liked

I like mentoring a school refugee who was experiencing adjustment difficult and who was going through trauma due to experiences he was exposed while living in the refugee camp in Kenya (Africa).

What I wish was different

I wish that refugees going through trauma are getting resources needed for their needs. That is something I would wish to be different. However, for my internship experience, I wish I did not have to worry about how commute.

Advice

When you are out there doing your internship, do not just think that everything you learned in class are the only things you are going to apply. Allow yourself to think outside of what you think you know. Most the time, they would prefer to learn who you truly are and not just a college student downloading his lecture materials. Be who you are and make an impact.
