Floor Staff/Drink Server

May 2017 • Apex, NC

What I liked

I liked a lot of my managers and co-workers. Dealing with customers was really good experience for me and will help me in the future. Since going to college I have worked at Regal when I come back for winter and summer.

What I wish was different

I did not get nearly as many hours over the summer as I did previously. Also, because I am certified to serve alcohol to customers, I was almost always scheduled at the concessions stand and I did not get to usher (clean theaters) that much, which is my favorite job. The managers at Regal also do not really put an emphasis on training people. It is more like they tell you briefly how to do something and then you are on your own, which can be stressful. They are always able to help though. Even though I liked most of my managers, I do not think the management at the theatre is great. Also some of the equipment we used did not work the way they were supposed to, and you would have to mess around with them to get them to work. I accidentally spilled hot coffee on my hands because I had to awkwardly pour it manually instead of using the dispense function because it was broken. I also burnt my hands a lot with the nacho cheese dispenser because the button would not work and I would have to press down on the cheese bags.

Advice

If you are confused about how to do something, always ask for help. It will save you from a lot of future trouble. Also, if a customer treats you badly, try not to take it too personally. They might be going through something you do not know about. And getting through all the bad customers is worth it because of the wonderful customers you get.

Floor Staff

April 2019 • Riverside, CA

What I liked

Love the flexibility! Never had an issue getting time off or changing hours if needed.

What I wish was different

The schedule doesn’t exactly follow the role description of doing multiple jobs. After my first couple of weeks working there, I was only placed in Concessions or Box Office, rather than oscillating between each Floor Staff role.

Advice

Be proactive in your specific job duties. It’s very easy to get behind and this causes issues for the rest of the day/shift. In other words, if there’s the time to work ahead, do it.

Box Office Attendant

May - August 2019 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

I liked that I got experience working in an environment that distributes entertainment. I also liked that I got to earn money to keep myself afloat for the following years when I take an internship. This also gave me valuable life experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have taken my summer in an experience more relevant to my field of study.

Advice

Definitely do all you can in life, especially when it comes to getting jobs. This might not help buff up my resume or make me look like a good animator, but it does help me when navigating through the world and relating to people.

What I liked

The friendly atmosphere. I enjoy working with my employers and employees alike. This was my second year returning and I hope to return again.

What I wish was different

Our benefits were slashed but other than that I wouldnt want anything different.

Advice

A movie theatre is a great first job for anyone. You will gain experience in customer service, leadership, cooperation, and money management, all at a reasonable pace with reasonable hours. It is not as stressful as fast food or retail. If you are a kid looking for a first part time job, I suggest you go for the movies.
