About RespectAbility

RespectAbility is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reshape the attitudes of American society so that people with disabilities can more fully participate in and contribute to society; and to empower people with disabilities to achieve as much of the American dream as their abilities and efforts permit.

The National Leadership Program (NLP) oversees the fellowship and internship opportunities at RespectAbility and attracts college/graduate students, recent graduates, and people transitioning back into the workforce. NLP provides fellows with valuable workplace experiences, job skills training, a renowned speaker series, and intensive strategic communications workshops. Fellows generally have an interest in public policy, communications, journalism, or political science and are thoughtful, results-driven individuals who want to achieve breakthrough results improving the lives of people with disabilities. Fellows are assigned to either the Director of Policy and Practices or the Director of Communications and operate under the guidance of the Director of the National Leadership Program.

Current and previous fellows at RepectAbility have interviewed presidential candidates and met with governors, senators, and representatives to discuss issues of employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The Director of the National Leadership Program develops a career plan for each fellow that enables him or her to gain appropriate workplace experience while contributing directly and measurably to RespectAbility’s impact. Graduates of the fellowship program are placed in leadership positions in competitive industries or pursue graduate degrees at top universities.
