Compliance Education Intern

June - August 2016 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed my team; furthermore i enjoyed being at State Street's Downtown Crossing location. The Wellesley network is incredible, if you ask and ask for more, it's possible to be involved in multiple projects.

What I wish was different

First, a big negative for me was the fact that the company is very disloyal to its employees. Multiple people on my team were fired (they were given two weeks notice), after having been with the company for over 10-12 years. Second, the company has a reputation of underpaying and overworking its employees. Third, if you're an international student, do not waste your time applying here as the company sponsors for very limited positions. I applied for an internship position my following year (after having received a a high intern review that I still have in writing, and after receiving excellent recommendations from coworkers and managers that are posted on my LinkedIn). Despite being in touch with the recruiters, I received no response. Until May of that year, I was told that the official process hadn't begun and that they weren't sure what was happening yet. By June, I was made aware by my manager that my team had a new intern. My problem with this was that 1) if they didn't want to rehire me I would have preferred to not have been strung along 2)as someone who worked there, received excellent reviews and was consistently in touch with the team, the very least I deserved was an automated response. Despite this, I applied for a full-time position. I met with two different recruiters and Wellesley alums at a recruiting event as well. I received a prompt response to my application. However, after my first round interview, I received no response whatsoever. I have since reached out to the recruiters and inquired about my application and there has been absolute silence on their end. I think it is absolutely appalling to not respond to a candidate that has already been screened and had one interview. Going back to my specific internship experience: I wish that the work was more meaningful; I often felt like because the company is so big, the work I was doing was really undervalued. It may help if they took time to explain to us what work we were doing and why we were doing it. I was also sent home early on multiple occasions and therefore did not get paid for a whole day. I also wish they had more company-paid intern socializing events.

Advice

Go above and beyond what you are told to do; really try your hand at everything. If you want more work, ask ask ask! It's a good place to learn how terrible an entry level job can be in the finance sector.

Finance Compliance Intern

June - August 2016 • Boston, MA

What I liked

• The Wellesley women at State Street • The company • The CEO

What I wish was different

• It felt more administrative than I was expecting

Advice

Get in touch with the Wellesley women in the building (not just in your department and/or your floor, I mean the whole building). I had weekly mentor meetings with one alumna, and had one-in-one time with three or four others. We also got together for dinner as a group in Late July or early August, which was one of my favorite things about the entire summer. They put me in touch with other people at State Street and I remain in touch with a couple of the women still.

Global Markets

July 2015 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I love the company culture, and how diverse people are.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a different manager, because mine was unprofessional and hostile.

Advice

I would advise students to talk about their Babson experiences and applicable courses that they have taken during the interview process. Managers love to hear that!
