WM - Waste Management

Accounting Intern

June - August 2021 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed my work experience in the WM HQ offices. The "green" environment office setting was very inviting, informative, and presentable. Its open space layout was adaptable for different workstyles. My Internship was in Hybrid format, a few days in the office and the rest was work-from-home. Free office parking was a definitive perk. Complementary refreshments was another perk. The AR dept. was loaded with experienced accounting professionals and AR technicians. Everyone was quite helpful and resourceful from my perspective. It was a great chance for me to acquire a industry AR experience and practice my Excel skills in the real-world, especially at a Fortune 250 company.

What I wish was different

I wish I was a natural earlybird, for I found myself waking up much earlier just to beat the Houson traffic. Asking for more feedback from my supervisors to improve my professional self. Advice: Listen more than you speak, specifically listen to add value to the conversation, not just to respond

Advice

*Invest in a EZtag to take advantage fo the HOV lane because they are a must going in & out of the city. *Frequently communicate with your supervisors to be informed of any changes to projects, tasks, or any other pertinent matters to your role. This builds a positve relationship, showing that you care about learning. *Ask for feedback based on your progress early on! The tid-bits will guide you to focus more is such areas. *Also, if your one of many interns. Network with the interns, as they may be helpful resources in the internship, if you happen to run into obstables, they may have useful info or knowledge of concepts/subject matter that you haven't encountered in your studies. You don't have to befriend everone. *Just have a easygoing, respectable, and friendly demeanor within a professional setting.

What I liked

The job is fast paced so the long 9.5 hour days move quickly and the overtime is a great benefit. They are excited to move people up in the company if you show potential so I never feel stagnant as opportunities for improvement are always visible.

Logistics Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • Ewing Township, NJ

What I liked

One thing I liked about the experience was that everyone in the office was very welcoming and willing to help me out. There was a great culture of fun and collaboration that benefitted my experience at Waste Management.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish would have been different would be more organization with the internship program. At some points I didn't have much work to do and wish that I could've been more directly involved with a team.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share would be to ask as many questions as possible. There are so many knowledgeable people at this company with years of experience, and learning from what they have to say can only help!

Logistics Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • Ewing Township, NJ

What I liked

I loved the encouraging environment that was spread throughout all units of the organization. Everyone was very willing to help me out when I needed it and I am thankful for the relationships I was able to build throughout the 11 weeks I was there.

What I wish was different

I wish that the program was a bit more structured than it was. At some points I found myself having nothing to do, so I just wish I had some time of continuous project to work on that would allow me to contribute even more to the organization.

Advice

I would definitely tell prospective interns to meet as many people as you can throughout the office within the first week. It makes working there so much easier, especially when you need to reach out to someone for help, but also for more casual things like break room conversations and career advice!

Recycling Education & Outreach

June - September 2018 • Kirkland, WA

What I liked

I learned a lot about what is behind the process of recycling, garbage, and compost. Visited 11 different cities in the PNW and educated a wide range of individuals. Staffed various events and networked with city officials.

What I wish was different

Throughout the summer we worked in teams of 2 or 3, and it would have been nice to have the opportunity to work with everyone.

Advice

This internship does require a lot of physical stamina. You spend your days walking in the hot sun or staffing events for long hours. Outside of that, just be open to learning and ask lots of questions!
