June - July 2019 • Garden City, NY

What I liked

Meeting new people and guiding future first year students through their first few days at Adelphi. Building stronger bonds with my co workers and staff. Learning more about what I'm capable of as a leader.

What I wish was different

It rained on our last day, when we were supposed to do an outside activity. I wish it didn't! Also, with buildings being under construction the location of everything was different than previously.

Advice

Allow yourself to let loose and encourage others to do the same. No one likes a stuck up orientation leader, be patient and empathetic to your students and co workers as well.

Archaeology Student

June - July 2018 • Eleftherna, Crete

What I liked

I loved being able to apply my knowledge directly. What I learned I got to experience hands on almost immediately, with authentic materials relevant to my field of study. The environment was stunning, and the weather was beautiful, but the culture really grabbed onto me. We handled baby lambs, made goat cheese, visited Knossos and other important archaeological sites. I learned even more about the rich mythology of ancient Greece, and when I visited Zeus's Cave, the cave in Crete where Zeus, king of the gods, was hidden as a baby to avoid being devoured by his father Kronos, I was absolutely flabbergasted. The people showed immense kindness, and the town was simply a tiny shepherding community yet it was full of life, and riches of its own. I found the olive trees like silver and the Aegean like emeralds. I cannot wait to go back some day.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had more time there. There was so much to experience we hardly had any free time, and when we did, it was for sleep. I absolutely could have used a few more weeks to truly experience living there. Also, I definitely wish for air conditioning next time!

Advice

When you go, take several moments to really breathe it in. Some of my most vivid memories there are of looking out the car window, studying the constellations in the exact location in which they originated, listening to Greek pop songs on the radio and just counting my blessings. That is so strong for me. Do that at every place you go, even if it seems insignificant.
