Austin Sunshine Camps

Kitchen assistant

May - July 2021 • Austin, TX

What I liked

I loved the family vibe that I got from them. It was always great to go into work and it was worth seeing the smiles of kid as faces.

What I wish was different

Just more pay. The job is hard but if I got paid more it would have been worth a little more time.

Advice

If you are ready to be surrounded by lots of children from various backgrounds then you should go here because the experience is worth it.

What I liked

Working with the campers was a great experience! The children we served were so impressionable.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would change is having a day during training where we could have a staff meeting to better understand strengths in order to coordinate who leads which activities.

Advice

Every child comes from a different background and you have to understand that sometimes the behavior of a child does not reflect directly upon them, but in which the situation they are in at home. Patience is a major tool to have in this position.

What I liked

The kids were the best part of the experience! Also, living in Austin for the summer was amazing for days off.

What I wish was different

Being able to choose which camp you worked at, but they are doing this for the upcoming summer.

Advice

You are going to be living in close quarters with other counselors for the entire summer!!! Keep that in mind.

Camp Counselor

What I liked

I joined Austin Sunshine Camps because of their mission to engage and empower youth through outdoor and educational activities. I enjoyed working with the staff at ASC, who were all committed to providing the best experience possible to underprivileged youth. I left the summer feeling as if I had made a difference in many kids' lives.

What I wish was different

I wish that we could have had more opportunities to train before our summer sessions started! It would have been nice to spend more time growing comfortable with my coworkers, who I lived with, and getting a feel of the ASC-specific camp experience.

Advice

I would advise someone to spend time thinking about what motivates them to work. This job was more strenuous than I expected, and the hours were long. Despite some of the hardships I experienced, I was motivated to perform at my best because I truly believed in the organization's mission. If I could do the summer over, I would choose to work at Austin Sunshine Camps again without hesitation.
