Quality Engineering Co-op

May - August 2023 • Tremonton, UT

What I liked

I was grateful to have a mentor engineer for the summer. There was an emphasis on collaborative work and there were many resources to complete assigned labor. Employees were willing to work with and help one-another. As a quality engineering co-op, I got to see the plant process as a whole and learned about different engineering disciplines.

What I wish was different

My mentor did not know he would be mentoring me until my first day, so more heads up would have allowed him to prepare more. I would have liked more hands on experience on the floor, but many projects required my time elsewhere.

Advice

Some advice I would give to students is to learn from engineers outside of your assigned discipline. Many people have excellent experience and advice to give you. Just because it may be about something outside of your area doesn't mean you should disregard it. Knowing more will always make you more versatile. Similarly, always ask questions when you are unsure.

Process Engineer Intern

May - October 2019 • Promontory, UT

What I liked

Awesome supervisor, and most of the work I did was proactive. Ten hour days, four days a week was nice.

What I wish was different

I wish the device I was working to improve wasn’t built by a third party. It made it difficult to obtain certain information about the device. I didn’t particularly enjoy leaving at 4:30am to drive to work. I hit three deer over the summer with my car as I drove in the dark.

Advice

Be proactive.

Software QA Automation Engineer Intern

June 2019 • Ogden, UT

What I liked

I liked that I was able to go to school and work at the same time. It gave me the opportunity to apply what I learned that day in class to what I worked on that day at work, and vice versa. The hands on experience will enable to me to take my career further and become a better engineer.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been able to have more class mates that were doing the same thing. We have had carpools from work to school and other good opportunities but does not always happen.

Advice

Never doubt that you can not get in your field right now and get experience. It is hard work but worth it to get the upper hand in the work force.

Industrial Hygienist Intern

May - December 2019 • Tremonton, UT

What I liked

I really loved the people I work with, I feel like everyone at Autoliv is willing to help me accomplish my goals. I like the projects I was assigned, as well as the projects I created and worked on myself. I learned so much as I worked, researched, and performed my tasks.

What I wish was different

I wish it was easier to get money from the company for projects. When I wanted to improve something it often took a huge team to get it going. If people weren't on board progress slowed.

Advice

Find a project you are passionate about, do everything you can to get it approved and worked on. Meet everyone! The more contacts you have the more people are there to help.
