Summer Associate

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I loved the culture within the company and the responsibility you are allowed to take on as well as the autonomy you get as an intern.

What I wish was different

Wish that I could have been able to see more of the corporate side of the business as well.

Advice

No matter where you intern it’s great to get the experience in an office/corporate environment to know what you like and don’t like when you are pursuing full time offers.

Residential Services and Property Management Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was able to experience all aspects of what it is like to work in a real estate investment trust. Working on-site , at a community, allowed for experience in customer service as well as a plethora of job specific learning. Specific to the industry, I was able to work closely with community managers on pricing, gain proficiency in programs such as MRI and Sales Force. Moreover, the internship included many day trips to different offices around the city such as the corporate office, a redevelopment project, and different communities within the portfolio. Lastly, AvalonBay provided housing for the interns in the program so that we could live and work together collaboratively within a community to gain experience as a resident.

What I wish was different

Most of the time in the internship was spent on-site on at a community which offered many benefits but as a student studying economics I had hoped there would be more exposure to the finances of the company. More time spent at the corporate office would greatly improve this internship for economics students, if possible.

Advice

I would suggest that students make connections with all of the senior employees that you are offered access to. Although the program promotes networking sufficiently throughout the program, the weight of this task is left on the intern (as it should be). Reach out, take business cards, follow up! Everyone at this company is more than willing to talk with you about your career path, whether or not it pertains to AvalonBay or not. The culture at this company is what makes it stand out, especially among the more experienced employees.
