What I liked

My internship experience with Avery Dennison has been a positive one. This is the second time I intern with this company and I have always felt like my opinions and feedback mattered as an intern. Everyone you meet here is so friendly and eager to share their experiences with you and help you in any way they can. The summer internship program that AD offers is also very structured and you feel like you have the support you need to be successful throughout your time with them.

What I wish was different

There is not much that I would change from this experience besides maybe starting sooner and being told where I would be relocating for the summer during my offer. Other than that I have had a great time learning about AD and growing as a professional.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share would be to not be afraid to reach out to people working at AD since everyone is more than willing to set time aside to talk to you. I would also say try to shadow as many people as you can even if it doesn't have to do with your role because you never know who you can meet and what valuable information they can provide you with.

What I liked

I have loved the culture of Avery Dennison. Everyone here, from all departments, in all positions, truly want to help you to succeed. The HR team responsible for the Summer Internship Program takes their jobs very seriously and push you to explore the company and make lasting connections with a variety of people in various roles. I also really appreciate the structure of the Summer Internship Program and Early Career Program here at AD. You are really pushed outside of your comfort zone to try and learn new things, while also having a safety net of mentors and other support if you need it. As for my role as an R&D Intern, I appreciate that the work I am doing doesn't feel empty. Sometimes in summer internships, it can feel like the work assigned is just busy work or work that you got it because no one else wanted to do it. When I was given my projects for the summer, their purpose was clearly defined. The applications of the data I collected were also clearly described to me so I know that the work I am doing has value to my team.

What I wish was different

After the initial onboarding week, the ramp-up to starting my project was a bit slow. There were some moments where I felt like I had no idea what I should be doing, but that is common in a new role. Early in my internship, I felt as though the R&D role I am in was not quite for me as I wasn't doing as much hands-on work as I'd have liked, but as my projects have ramped up, I've been able to get the hands-on experience I have been wanting.

Advice

You really have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I'm not exactly the most social person, but networking opportunities have been thrown at me left and right, so I've had to quickly get comfortable networking. You also have to get comfortable with asking for help. As I've mentioned, everyone at AD wants you to succeed and they will go out of their way to facilitate your success, but they won't know to help unless you ask.

Pilot Plant Engineer

What I liked

The company is very nice and they help you learn whatever you need. They gave me full access to the lab and the independence to operate how I want to. Plus there is free food around once a week.

What I wish was different

The company seems very disorganized. Events happen last minute, coworkers never seem to be on the same page, and the company didn't have anything for me to do for a few weeks. It took me 5 weeks (out of 10) to get fully trained. This meant I couldn't start my project until week 6.

Advice

Make sure you are comfortable enough in the lab to operate alone but feel free to ask questions. Even people from other teams are willing to help answer questions and train you on lab techniques.

Operations Intern

What I liked

Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Avery Dennison. First off, I love the culture that Avery Dennison has going here. Everyone is so friendly and outgoing while maintaining a professional atmosphere. In addition, I was always kept busy - there was seldom a moment where I didn't have an abundance of work. The work I was doing was relevant too. I learned lessons and skills that school can't teach you. Lastly, my manager was great and ensured that I was getting good experience for my future.

What I wish was different

I wish I got to start here a bit earlier, instead of late May.

Advice

I would advise that you meet as many people as you can and build your network. Furthermore, I suggest you come into the internship with an open mind and a willingness to learn. It will make your life and your manager's life much easier.

RFID Applications Engineering Co-op

What I liked

I really enjoyed the work experience as well as the work environment at Avery Dennison. Through this position I gained great problem solving and data analytic skills from the projects and testing I completed. I also enjoyed the work atmosphere because of how friendly and supportive everyone is. I always felt valued and welcomed by my co-workers.

What I wish was different

Something that I wish was different would be some of the projects I worked on throughout the semester. Some testing can involve repeating the same actions which can sometimes feel very repetitive. While these were not my favorite projects, they had to be done.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about my experience is do not be afraid to ask questions. The engineers are always happy to answer any questions about what you should be doing and it can save you a lot of time when working.

RFID Applications Engineering

What I liked

I enjoyed my time at Avery Dennison. I loved how everyone is so willing to help out and help co-ops further their careers. They just implemented at program at my facility to help interns move around and stay with the company past graduation. I received an offer to come back for a different role, which I am very excited about. As for this particular role, I loved being able to lead my own projects for large companies. I had the opportunity to test various RFID inlays and suggest them to large corporations - and I know I am actually making a difference in the supply chain.

What I wish was different

I wish this co-op had been geared more towards chemical engineering. It was a general engineering position - open to any engineering major. However, it is helping me be able to move towards a chemE position within the company.

Advice

Career professionals love to help young people. Everyone I have met in the engineering field at Avery Dennison was so excited to talk to me about what they do and show me possible future opportunities. They also love when you ask questions. My bosses know that this is a time for me to learning and love to answer my questions. Overall just do not be afraid to speak up and talk to everyone around you. It is great for networking.

What I liked

Working with Avery Dennison this summer has been an outstanding experience. In this position I have learned so many new things and have been given the opportunity to challenge myself daily. Everyone is more than willing to help and the constant support makes interns feel very welcome. Avery Dennison is a wonderful company and I would highly recommend this internship program.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship could have been in person rather than remote, but due to COVID this was not possible. Other than that everything has been great and I wouldn't change a thing.

Advice

Be willing to ask questions. Everyone wants to see you succeed and can provide you with invaluable insights into the company and the corporate world.

R&D Medical Co-op

What I liked

The culture at Avery Dennison is so supportive. Interns and co-ops are treated as valuable team members who are respected and heard. As a woman in engineering, I appreciate the strong female leadership and encouragement that surrounds me. The team also encourages me to visit other sites and explore everything Avery Dennison has to offer. The mentorship program which is tied into the internship program is very helpful and organized. The internship program also allows you to learn about ELS (Enterprise Lean Six-Sigma) which is an extremely valuable resource. Overall, this has been an incredible experience.

What I wish was different

I wish the work load was a bit more consistent- some days it is steady, some days it is packed, and some days it is lacking. This is real life, however!

Advice

Even if you do not think you are qualified, interview anyway. Interning at Avery Dennison is a opportunity that should not be passed up.

Sales Intern

What I liked

The work environment at Avery Dennison created by the employees is phenomenal. Everyone is very friendly and more than happy to answer questions or show you things you do not understand. The sales internship provided me a great introduction to sales. I was able to participate in many day to day operations of the inside sales team. I helped qualify leads, process sample requests, and make product recommendations. I also had several independent projects that I worked on such as compiling a customer survey and updating CRM information after researching accounts online. I had a great experience working on the inside sales team at Avery Dennison and thought that I gained great work experience while providing value to the company.

What I wish was different

My internship started while Avery Dennison was still following a work from home model due to covid. Even though I would have rather been in the office, the company was very flexible and still provided me a great summer experience. I wish I could have had more in person interaction with my coworkers and the other interns because they all seemed like really great people over zoom.

Advice

The amount of information I received in the first four weeks of my internship was crazy. Avery Dennison has thousands of products that each serve a different application. Take lots of notes and ask questions if you do not understand something. Avery Dennison also uses a lot of acronyms so make sure you know what they are if you hear the being used repeatedly. Finally, ask for more work if you have time on your hands. My manager was very impressed and happy when I told her that I felt like I had too much free time and wanted more work and she helped me to find projects that gave me good experience and provided value to the company.

Process Engineer Intern

What I liked

What I liked most was the welcoming environment from the site I worked at as well as the company as a whole. It's clear they invest a lot of time with their Early Careers Program and always try to help new employees get well networked and comfortable. And whether it be questions regarding my specific projects or just questions about the company, the people in my building were more than happy to help.

What I wish was different

I share the same sentiment as Raj Mukkamala, my only wish would be to have a bit more time with my projects. This has overall been a very positive experience, so I’d say the only downside was how much time I spent getting acquainted with the machinery and the site before getting started on my projects.

Advice

Take networking seriously, you’ll be given great opportunities to get to know other employees from all around the company so make sure you’re using that time wisely. And don't be afraid to reach out yourself or ask for site tours.

What I liked

I love how supportive and encouraging all of the experienced employees are. It really makes me feel comfortable asking questions and voicing my opinions during meetings.

What I wish was different

I wish my entire department was in person. Due to Covid-19, I started my employment with Avery Dennison just as my department was allowed back into the office. However, because it's an option, most of us (including myself) stay home most days.

Advice

Make sure you're paying attention during meetings and not afraid to ask questions!

Operations Intern

What I liked

At the beginning of the summer, I was assigned 5 projects and responsible for their progress. I really liked that my manager was open to me adding new projects and shifting my focus from projects I did not find substantial. I had the opportunity to collaborate with operators, technical experts, engineers and management to work together on my projects. I was most surprised by some of the help I got outside of work. I had car trouble during my internship and my coworkers took turns picking me up and driving me home. I interned for this company twice, once in Cleveland summer 2020 and in Peachtree City, Georgia summer 2021. Both were excellent opportunities.

What I wish was different

Some manufacturing sites only have one intern. It is always nice to have multiple to form a community.

Advice

In manufacturing, don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. The best part about engineering is you do not have to sit at a desk all day. You learn a lot more on the floor watching the process than just reading about it or pulling data.

Acounting Intern

What I liked

My experience as an Accounting intern at Avery Dennison has been great! AD has a very welcoming environment and it was extremely noticeable that Diversity and Inclusion is one of their top values. I was able to join two employee resource groups (Voz Latina and Elevate) that gather every so often to support each other and have meaningful conversations. In my role, I have been assigned various individualized tasks where I was able to leverage the skills I gained in school to complete. Along with this, it was easy to ask questions and gain answers when I needed help. It has been an impactful experience, and I would highly recommend working for Avery Dennison!

What I wish was different

I did find myself a bit short on everyday projects since most of my work usually done at month-end.

Advice

Ask lots of questions, even if it's a small one. Everyone is ready to help you get the answer. Also, write down notes as often as you can when learning something new. It is very easy to let small bits of information slide but it could be very useful knowledge for the future.

Pilot Plant Engineering Intern

What I liked

Mill Hall is a very interesting site with R&D in the lab, scale-up in the Pilot Plant, and production as well. Everyone on-site was supportive and helpful, creating a positive environment that welcomed new ideas and questions. As the Pilot Plant Intern, there was a lot of opportunity to get involved with different aspects of the site. Finding an in-person internship experience for Summer 2021 was also great, and the team was very flexible with working some hours remotely if needed. Avery Dennison takes diversity, inclusion, and equity very seriously. I was very thankful that the interns were given the opportunity to participate in Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). These groups gave me many opportunities to network with people at other sites and work on professional and personal development skills.

What I wish was different

It would have been great to be able to network in-person with interns at the other sites, especially being at a more remote location in Mill Hall. Although we couldn't travel with COVID restrictions, Avery Dennison still did a very good job to bring us together and engage us in virtual events. I think there is also still work to be done to bring women into leadership and engineering roles. Avery Dennison is very aware of this, and works hard to make the workplace more diverse and inclusive.

Advice

Talk to as many people as you can, and ask a lot of questions. There is so much to learn from the people working in this company, so don't miss any opportunities.

What I liked

Avery Dennison makes it very easy to reach out to higher ups for anything. I talked to Senior Principle engineers all the way to operators without any barriers.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more facility tours. I was an intern during the wind down of COVID so I had to individually schedule tours at each plant. It was definitely difficult to find the time to reach out to these people but it was an incredible networking opportunity.

Advice

Definitely make sure to reach out to all branches of Avery Dennison. The collaboration between branches is so important and emphasized. Don't be afraid to ask for tours, career advice, or general help with anything.

What I liked

I enjoyed every aspect of my internship from start to end. From day one, my department (Quality) was overwhelmingly kind and helpful. Not only did I feel welcome from the start, but I was immediately given work that would make a large impact on the company. Receiving this intern position after my first year of college, I was not sure what to expect or what kind of work I would be assigned to. Ultimately, the company trusted me to head a project that involved collaborating with worldwide management. Within my role, I learned the ins and outs of various careers, which is invaluable to students who may not know exactly what they want to do in the future. Avery Dennison prioritizes inters' learning opportunities and makes each and every one of us feel vital to the company every day.

What I wish was different

As this was the summer of 2021, COVID restrictions were still in place. This meant that a large portion of interns were working remotely. I was in the office, but did not get to form connections with other interns that I imagine I would in another year. Not only were interns remote, but many full time employees worked from home as well. In my department, there were less than 10 employees in the office on any given day. In any other year, this would not be an issue, but I do with I could have been able to form more connections and meet everyone I ended up working with.

Advice

Always make sure to ask questions when you do not understand something. Avery Dennison creates amazing products, but new interns and employees may not understand all of the language used in the industry. There is no shame in asking for help. In fact, asking questions will aid in completing work faster and easier. Also, strike up a conversation with everyone you meet. It is wonderful to hear about the differing paths that have been taken that all led to Avery Dennison, and these connections could help you to land another internship or full time job within the company.

What I liked

Avery Dennison really values their interns and its clear they are investing in your future. I was given meaningful projects that helped me develop as an engineer. I was able to work with a multitude of people including operators, project engineers, maintenance staff and EI Technicians. Overall, everyone is willing to help you along the way, and will really take the time to help you through any challenges you come across. In the end, I feel like I was able to add tremendous value to the business.

What I wish was different

There isn't really anything I would change about my experiences with Avery Dennison.

Advice

Don't be afraid to stop and ask questions. Everyone is willing to help you and its better to ask for clarification ahead of time if you are confused rather than go in a different direction and have to pivot later. Make sure to talk and network with as many people as you can because there are some phenomenal people that work at this company.

What I liked

I really love my co-op at Avery Dennison. The engineers trust me with my own projects and allow me to make tag recommendations for real companies on my own. Everyone is very approachable if I have questions and love to help. I also love working alongside 4 other co-ops, we are all best friends!

What I wish was different

I wish this co-op had more to do with chemical engineering. The position is open to any engineering major, but it is not really specific to any type. I wish it were more challenging and calculations based.

Advice

Ask questions! Everyone is so nice and willing to help. It is better to ask early instead of doing the project wrong.

What I liked

The environment is great. It has been one of the most productive summers for me. Corporate culture is everything I expected after reading about it. I experienced a culture of helping others and taking care of each other.

What I wish was different

The training week is a robust and well-organized event. I wish some parts of training is provided in the first week to allow interns familiarize with the organization.
