Avery Dennison

Operations Intern

May 2023 • Fairport Harbor, OH

What I liked

I absolutely love the environment that Avery Dennison has. The culture, their values, the people, the work. It all just seems in line with my career aspirations. It is also a place that allows you to ask any sort of question you please with no fear of it being a "dumb question". The people in your team are people that want you to succeed, and if you put in the effort, it seems to happen all around.

What I wish was different

Honestly, nothing. The Fairport plant is amazing with the people and the work. The honest truth is the only thing i wish is that i could've stayed here longer.

Advice

Come in ready to ask questions and be curious. Curiosity is the way to improve manufacturing and learn for yourself, so be curious.

Accounting Intern

May - August 2023 • Mentor, OH

What I liked

Avery Dennison is such a great company to work for. The company has such a great environment from the place to the employees and everything about Avery makes you feel welcomed. Everyone here is so outgoing and willing to help if you ever need help with anything. As an intern I learned more about how Avery Dennison is a great place to network not only with the other interns but all of the staff. Having the opportunity to be an intern at Avery has given me a lot of knowledge and development in new schools. Another thing I like about Avery is how they introduce you to the company and you learn more about their products and what they do no matter what position you are in.

What I wish was different

There is only one thing I wish that was different and it’s the start date of the internship. I wish it could have started earlier in May but otherwise there is nothing else.

Advice

The advice that I recommend is to network as much as possible and don’t be afraid to meet new people. Reach out to your managers and have 1:1 conversations to see if you are on the right path or if there is anything more you can do to improve as an intern.

Operations Intern

May - August 2023 • Painesville, OH

What I liked

I worked at Avery Dennison the previous Summer as well and enjoyed it so much I decided to return this Summer when given a return offer. My biggest concern in returning to the same company for a second internship was the chance that I'd be doing the same thing again, but that wasn't the case. The recruiter for internships, Kristin, is great about ensuring returning interns get a completely different experience from the prior year. I feel like I was given a significant amount of work that was relevant to both my future and the company. Overall, great experience.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish had been different would be how late I found out where I would be located for the Summer. I understand the location assignments to operations interns are dependent on company needs and Avery Dennison lets you know the location as soon as they can, its just later than I would like to know.

Advice

I would advise you approach this opportunity with a desire to learn and grow. In addition, you'll meet so many great people who have loads of experience and it is beneficial to get to know them the best you can.

Operations Summer Intern

May - August 2023 • Mentor, OH

What I liked

I loved the team and the company culture. Everyone is more than happy to help you with any project you have, and its a safe-to-fail environment. Its such an amazing learning environment; you can ask anyone anything and they will gladly answer your question and help you learn more. Expanding your network is as simple as sending someone a ping asking to meet. We were google-based, which allows us to use google calendar to set up meetings.

What I wish was different

Truly, this experience has been so incredible and made me so excited for my future career.

Advice

Expand your network as much as possible. Join ERGs, get to know your team, tour the plants, and overall meet everyone and anyone that you can.

Market Research Intern

January 2023 • Mentor, OH

What I liked

I absolutely love the people and the culture at Avery Dennison. It is a supportive and welcoming environment where everyone truly wants to help you reach your professional goals. I have heard "we want to develop you" countless times while working here and that goes a long way knowing you have good people in your corner. For example, I interned at Avery Dennison last summer for the Procurement team. Kristin and Hallice worked with me all summer to help me move into the marketing role I have now. They supported me and listened to the opportunities I wanted to explore within AD.

What I wish was different

Truly, I can't think of anything that I would have wanted differently, so I will talk a little about onboarding week. When you first get hired as an intern you will attend an onboarding week. This week allows you to form relationships with the other interns and begin to learn about Avery Dennison and what he company is all about. This is probably one of my favorite weeks because you get to meet so many people who are in the same boat as you.

Advice

As long as you put yourself out there and do your best things generally tend to work out okay. It can be intimidating networking or putting yourself out there, but I highly encourage you to get involved and meet as many of these wonderful people as you can!

Operations Intern

May 2023 • Mentor, OH

What I liked

I really liked how everyone was very friendly and willing to help me learn and figure things out as the internship progressed. I learned skills that went beyond my classes.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't really change much. This Internship has been going amazing.

Advice

Get to know everyone that you possibly can, and take everything you can out of this experience. This is a learning experience straight from the source so it would be ii\n your best interest to gain all that you can out of this.

Operation Intern

May 2022 • Fairport Harbor, OH

What I liked

Avery Dennison is a company that promotes the collaboration on job environment. The company has a great culture helping people joining the workforce. I enjoyed how this internship had various hands on experience and allowed me to participate on projects. Avery has a lot of flexibility when it comes to new workers in terms of what project you want to be working with and your locations.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have learned more about ELS for example being able to receive yellow belt training which encompasses a set of training and participating or managing a project.

Advice

It is important to network and know your co-workers names even if you do not work directly with them. This helped me out seeking out for helps when I had doubts and needed feedbacks to improve my work.

Computer Engineering Intern

August 2022 • Miamisburg, OH

What I liked

I liked the working environment during the course of my internship. I also had the opportunity to work with other engineers and interns which enhanced my learning. The projects I worked on were both challenging and stimulating as I was able to hone critical thinking skills learned in school. I highly recommend this company during your job/intern search.

What I wish was different

There is not much I would change from this experience. The experience has been wholesome.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is not to be hesitant in reaching out to others in the workspace. The more questions you ask, the clearer the objective is to you.

Quality Engineering Intern

February 2021 • Miamisburg, OH

What I liked

Avery Dennison allowed me to have an extended internship and worked with and around my school schedule. This allowed me to work on various projects and gain necessary real world experience while also helping the business to further its goals. I was able to work in two different roles first as a manufacturing intern and then as a quality engineering intern this provided me with a varied experience that I enjoyed.

What I wish was different

I ran into little to nothing that I had issues with, the only thing I would say that would be beneficial is maybe to allow the interns more of an opportunity to intermingle with the other Avery sites as they are all so varied. I was at the Miamisburg printer service division site but that is drastically different than the Reflectives site.

Advice

Reach out, everyone at Avery Dennison is really there to help you. Don't be shy.

RFID Applications Intern

January - August 2022 • Miamisburg, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed learning about RFID technology, it felt nice to be working with emerging tech and seeing how it influences the world around us! My manager and the engineers I worked under were all very dedicated and helpful when it came to teaching me about all the various tests and reports we carry out in this role. Everyone at Avery Dennison has been very friendly, and there are endless networking opportunities to give you insight into other areas of the company and meet new people.

What I wish was different

Although every test I completed helped in some way to either provide data for a tag, provide information to a customer, etc. there were times when the work felt monotonous. However, I felt this less and less as I gained more experience and was given bigger and more unique projects.

Advice

It is very important to ask lots of questions. I came into this role knowing very little about RFID, but asking questions allowed me to learn so much about the importance of what I was doing, as well as how the technology works. Additionally, take advantage of the networking opportunities!

R&D Intern, Label Solutions

August - December 2022 • Miamisburg, OH

What I liked

I got to spend a lot of time in the lab. I did a lot of testing on adhesion of our labels and root cause analysis on why they behave like they do. It turns out labels are more complicated than I thought. I also did a lot of tests to determine print quality on many different formats by using a scanner to determine how a barcode scans. It was a very hands on internship, which I really enjoyed. I wasn't stuck at my desk all day. The team is also super nice and inclusive of their intern. A lot of collaboration takes place so I got close to the team.

What I wish was different

Some of the tests could be repetitive, which got tiring as the semester went on. I applied a lot of labels to a lot of surfaces and then pulled them off to see what happened. It started to blend together. The semester also got off to a slow start. I didn't really get a project until week 3, so it was a frustrating and boring start. There is a lot to learn so all the knowledge builds on itself.

Advice

This is my 3rd rotation at Avery Dennison but my 1st in this position. What shocked me the most with the change was how much more of the company there was than I realized. This team had a lot more cross-functional responsibilities and more business politics. My advice is to make connections with all the departments because you never know when you could use help. I also think it helps to be aware of what other parts of the business do and how they relate to you. I think its helps you understand how the business works and other jobs you might be interested in.

R&D Intern

June - August 2021 • Mentor, OH

What I liked

All of the people I met were so willing to explain new concepts to me which I really appreciated. I loved that I was always being challenged and encouraged to step outside of my comfort zone. Stepping into a new role is always intimidating, so it was great to be welcomed by friendly faces.

What I wish was different

Overall, my experience was great. The only thing that I would change is being hired and notified so late. However, even though I was hired late, I was still able to have an impactful summer.

Advice

I would encourage interns to reach out to anybody within the company that they're interested in speaking with. Everybody is so open to sharing their experience and they will offer amazing advice and insight.

Operations Intern

May - August 2022 • Fairport Harbor, OH

What I liked

One of my favorite parts of my internship was that my manager allowed me to pick which projects I wanted to work on, and since he knew I had an interest in quality, he got me connected with the Regional Quality Manager at my site to do a project for her. I also enjoyed being able to meet all of the other interns and network with professionals in the company, as well as Avery Dennison's atmosphere. Everyone has a positive attitude and really values having a work-life balance, which is refreshing in the field of engineering.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have had the opportunity to start my internship before the end of May, and I also wish that I had a more consistent amount of work. I would switch between having a lot of downtime and searching for work to do and then having an abundance of work that I really had to delegate.

Advice

Get to know your coworkers on a personal level! They are more than just engineers, they have families, children, interests, and hobbies. The more you get to know each other, the more likely you are to keep the connection after your internship!

RFID Applications Engineer Intern

May - August 2022 • Miamisburg, OH

What I liked

I liked the environment of the internship program at Avery Dennison. While the environment at Miamisburg might not be the greatest, there are still plenty of events organized through the internship program that show how much the company cares about their interns. Also, working with a lot of other great interns and engineers made the job much more enjoyable.

What I wish was different

I wish that I got the opportunity to see the bigger picture of a lot of the projects I worked on. A lot of times I was given projects that I didn't know the background on which didn't give me much motivation towards the project. It was often hard to understand how the projects I was doing was benefiting our customers. However, as I communicated this issue with my manager I slowly became more involved in the projects I was working on.

Advice

A piece of advice I would share is to make the most of the projects that you are given. Some projects will be more interesting than others. The less interesting projects are much more painless if you have the right mindset going to it. While it might not seem like those boring projects are worth the time and effort, the company significantly benefits from them.

Operations Intern

May - August 2022 • Painesville, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed this internship! I'll describe the things I like most within the Interpersonal and Engineering aspects. Interpersonal: I love that whenever you have an idea, everyone is opened to hearing about it. Within my time at the Painesville Films Facility, I have been able to connect with many different people. Through conversations with my manager about career goals and interest, he was then able to connect me to other people within the company that are in the roles that I am interested in. I also appreciate the involvement of the Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that are available to all employees. Overall, there is so much support and there is always someone willing to help no matter what. Engineering: I have been able to develop many skills while being in my short-term position. I was able to learn about the many processes within the plant, and it developed a great understanding of tasks that are needed from the engineering aspect. My manager is a project engineer, so the projects I was given dealt with project management. In this position my manager has given me plenty opportunity to exercise project management skills by allowing me to schedule scope meetings and leading them. Overall the projects I have been assigned are not only challenging, but they are also stimulating.

What I wish was different

Something that I would change is knowing location prior to the offer, but I understand why location varies upon acceptance. Other than that- my experience has been great and professionally fulfilling!

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience would be to not hesitate to ask questions and connect with others! The people here at Avery Dennison are always opened to supporting others. I would also advise anyone going into an internship position to always be curious and open-minded!

Controls Engineering Intern

May - July 2022 • Fairport Harbor, OH

What I liked

An Avery Dennison internship is structured for your success. My manager, team members, and internship directors always recommended the roles, projects, and meetings that I showed interest in. In addition to the contributions I made to the team, they always kept the development of my skills in mind. Something I admire about the company culture is how focused it is on employee development. Avery Dennison employees can transition roles based on desired leadership skills, newly discovered interests, etc., providing the individuals with the room to grow in the direction they choose. During my internship, I got to work on projects that both expanded my knowledge of controls engineering and made a positive change to the facility. I am extremely satisfied with all that I have learned from the experienced engineers in the field!

What I wish was different

Being fairly new to controls engineering, the role requires a longer period of training than I expected. I was still able to focus on and complete my projects, but looking back, the only thing I wish had been different was a condensed training, therefore having more time to explore interesting projects.

Advice

Reach out for the opportunities that interest you most! Let your manager know if an ongoing project is something you are interested in and they would be more than happy to have you contribute to it. And in general, seek out the roles you would enjoy. Avery Dennison appreciates having people who are passionate about what they do and will help you find those opportunities.

R&D Intern

May - August 2022 • Mentor, OH

What I liked

The work environment at Avery Dennison is absolutely amazing. Everyone is so encouraging and welcoming and they make you feel like a part of the team even as just an intern. It is a great place to start building your career by gaining valuable industry experience. Starting week gives you the chance to meet other interns and build your network which is so valuable at this point in my life. I feel productive and contribute to my team and am enjoying the projects I have been assigned. I do not think I could have asked for a better place to start an internship for my summer.

What I wish was different

Communication from the internship program was difficult to navigate sometimes.

Advice

Make sure you are taking advantage of every opportunity that they give you during your internship experience. Go to networking events, set up meetings with people, take tours, and identify what parts of Avery Dennison interest you the most. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone and take initiative!

Marketing Intern

May - August 2022 • Mentor, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed the environment at Avery Dennison and the people overall. There is not one person who I would feel uncomfortable asking for help. During my internship, I was given a list of tasks divided by my team to work on over the amount of time there. I got to work on projects for the largest trade show that Avery Dennison attends, Labelexpo Americas. I enjoyed this and got to learn the behind the scenes to the trade show.

What I wish was different

I wish that there would have been a class or seminar on getting to know our products better. I feel as though there was a good understanding, but getting to truly know the products Avery Dennison offers would have helped in marketing them.

Advice

Network, network, network! Get to know as many people as possible. This can help with future connections. Be willing to keep an open mind and be ready to learn. This can open up the opportunity to different possibilities or potential career paths.

Sales Intern

June - August 2022 • Mentor, OH

What I liked

My experience with Avery has been awesome! From the minute I started the internship I felt supported, encouraged, and welcomed by the amazing culture the company has! Avery Dennison values intern growth and development. In my position as a sales intern, I was able to experience the culture firsthand by working with my team and networking with other departments. Everyone goes above and beyond to make sure you succeed and make you feel heard. The internship exposes you to various aspects of the company, the products, career growth, opportunities, and the customer base while allowing you to gain a ton of insight along the way. Avery Dennison has been an amazing experience so far and easily the best place I have worked at!

What I wish was different

There is very little I would change about my experience and it is getting into the office more!

Advice

My advice is to be yourself, network, and not be afraid to ask questions!

Supply Chain Intern

May 2022 • Miamisburg, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to explore all that Avery Dennison has to offer. The program for interns is well developed with plenty of networking opportunities to learn more about the company, and meet (so many) people from those just starting with the company to senior-level executives. My manager provided me with a project that was my responsibility but still ensured I had the resources needed to succeed. There was enough structure to keep me busy, but enough flexibility to explore my interests.

What I wish was different

With some staff working from home while others were in the office, it could be challenging at times to get the information I needed for the project I worked on.

Advice

Be curious and show initiative! I learned a lot by asking why things were done in a certain way and not being afraid to do things that were new to me. Not everything will be clear-cut, but there are a lot of people who will be able to help you, you just have to ask!
