Financial planning and Analysis Intern

What I liked

Exploring how a fortune 500 company operates on the global scale allowed me to further understand complex parts of the basic business model.

What I wish was different

As it was in Italy, I wish I had been able to converse in Italian rather than have employees switch to English.

Advice

The best part of the experience was making it happen, it was an 8 month process, and I received my contract the day before I arrived in Florence.

What I liked

Company Culture, Professional Environment, Excellent Pay, Networking Opportunities. There were not many things that I disliked about this company

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have a recruiter present for my hiring interview. My interview was done using HireVue and I found it difficult to record myself using my webcam rather than having an in person interview where I could communicate face-to-face

Advice

Go into this job open-minded and ready to learn. The Applications Engineering Internship at Baker Hughes gave me the opportunity to progress in my professional career and I am thankful for the experience

Engineering and Technology Intern, Project Fulfillment Test Lab Engineer (Surface Pressure Control)

What I liked

I enjoyed the work environment, the different tests performed, the co-workers, and teamwork. Baker Hughes is an employer that allows the interns to move around and be involved in any project, as long as the manager and the engineers in charge approve., for the most part, your role will be to shadow an engineer, and you may have to do the grunt work. Still, the experience of the project is well worth the time you put into it.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have more training regarding the computer systems used. Not being experienced with SAP, produced a learning period for myself, I had to learn most of it by trial and error. I asked a lot of questions, but I did wish I had some experience using SAP or a small training from an experienced co-worker.

Advice

Always ask questions and volunteer for everything. If you are sitting around, get up, and talk to other departments. As an Intern, you have the opportunity to ask as many questions you want, and most engineers like to talk about their projects and their experiences.

Supply Chain Engineering Intern

What I liked

I had an amazing manager who pushed me to be independent and find solutions on my own.

What I wish was different

The intern program was horribly mismanaged and uncoordinated. It took interns up to two weeks to get a computer and access to their buildings.

Advice

Make sure you enjoy the oil and gas industry before going into it. It’s not for everybody, certainly wasn’t for me, but the experiences I had were amazing and I am glad I had the opportunity to work at Baker Hughes.

What I liked

I was given control of two long term projects, and that allowed me to dive deep into one subject and become an expert in that area. In the end, I resolved my project and made a lasting impact on the production of our products.

What I wish was different

I wish I was exposed to more fields of study within the company , to get a more well-rounded idea of what this company does.

Advice

You have to be self-driven and be able to take initiative. If given ownership of a long-term project, you have to be able to hold yourself accountable to your deadlines and deliverables.

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to work in several parts of the business and get a good understanding of what a role in corporate finance would look like after graduation. There was a lot of emphasis on teamwork and meeting different leaders across the business to learn more about different areas of the company. People were always willing to help me out when I was struggling with work and were generally very supportive.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd taken on more opportunities and immersed myself in different areas of the business.

Software Engineering Intern

What I liked

I loved the work environment. I didn't meet a single person I didn't like. All of my work was implemented in a live production environment, I did not just do intern work. They hire many co-ops so I got to network with other students and learn about all aspects of the company.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I loved the whole experience.

Don't be afraid to mess up or ask questions. Everyone is on your side here.

What I liked

The projects I was assigned were interesting and challenging, and the manager I worked with gave me a lot of flexibility.

What I wish was different

The large corporate structure of GE made it difficult to get things done sometimes; it could feel like there was a lot of red tape to tread through.

Advice

Get to know your manager early and establish regular times to meet with him/her. It helps keep you accountable and also lets you discuss issues or roadblocks with your manager.

Mechanical Engineering Co-Op

What I liked

I had plenty of opportunities to develop my skills while working on impactful projects, and learned a lot about an industry I'd never known existed

What I wish was different

Logistically, getting set up was difficult while dealing with the initial onboarding process. There were some internal difficulties with HR shifting around, which has mostly been resolved but will continue due to shifting employees on the corporate level.

Advice

Reach out to different departments and find people to work with that are outside of your area of expertise. This allowed me to be part of projects that I'd never be able to complete on my own, and work on small teams.
