Global Technology and Operations Analyst

June - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

Working in a team that ensured I was not just individually learning, but making a contribution to the team. I was slowly brought on, working with individual team members identifying what I might want to work on for the summer. As I got comfortable, I was able to go to anyone for help or advice, or even to grab a cup of coffee. Beyond just my day to day work, the networking during and outside of the day allowed me to get a feel for the bank as a whole, and truly understand if it's somewhere that I want to start my career.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had become more involved in the activities outside the bank. I was so focused on completing tasks and setting up meetings that I put the other events the bank hosted as not priorities.

Advice

When you're not doing work specifically for your team, make an effort to reach out to anyone in the bank. As an intern, you're encouraged to get to know the bank as best as possible to see if you want a career there, and there's no better way to learn that then speaking with people who have been in your shoes.

Advisor Development Intern

June - August 2019 • Hillsboro, OR

What I liked

I liked being in a financial Center and being able to travel to different ones to see how all different roles work together. I also enjoyed working on group projects with other interns in different offices throughout the west coast.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more direct, personal contact with other interns, as everything was via phone or video conference. I also wish I would have had more access to the Merrill Lynch offices and would have been able to shadow an FA in their offices, rather than the ones that sit-in at the banking centers.

Advice

Come in with an open mind and be willing to do whatever they ask to do, whether it relates to your wished career path or not. You're going to learn so much from working in a financial center.

Global Technology Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

During my time at Bank of America, I was able to complete a project with another intern that is still being used by the team. Working on such a meaningful project gave me experience in the type of work I might be doing in the future. Also, my manager was incredibly helpful and a great mentor.

What I wish was different

A couple things I wish had been different were the pace of my project and the number of women not only on my team but in my division. For a good chunk of the first month, a lot of what I did was figuring out what I needed to be working on. So, my project wasn't completely finalized until the beginning of my second month there. Also, there were no women on my team, which would have been nice to have more for support.

Advice

Take initiative on projects. If you find something that can be added to a project that you are working on, ask and try to implement it because if you don't do it, then no one else will.

Quantitative Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

The organization did well in making us feel like we were a valuable part of the organization. We had a series of meetings with top executives where they would tell us about the type of work they did and their career experiences which was really nice as I got to learn more about the company outside my own role and team.

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken up more work for myself.

Advice

Try and network as much as you can with different people in the org to get a better sense of what roles you might want to try out and to just build your connection.

Advisor Development Program Intern

June - August 2019 • Elk Grove, CA

What I liked

Lots of locations available so I got to live at home. Pay was good and it was full time. Big company name to put on resume. Nice people in my office.

What I wish was different

I didn’t learn much and the manager didn’t know what I would be doing all summer. They just had me greet people at the bank all day. The days went by very slowly.

Advice

Try and get the Merrill track. If not, find a different internship.

Global Technology Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I got to work on a project from start to finish, was given a surprising amount of autonomy in how it could be completed. Learned new technologies along the way, became much more confident as a programmer.

What I wish was different

Took a while to set up all of my technology, and I had to wear business casual.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask your team questions if you have them, and ask about what the team's overtime policy is. It varies from team to team.
