Retail Assistant and Sustainability Coordinator

June - September 2019 • Bay Head, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed the day-to-day interactions that I had with club members and other employees. I also liked that my boss gave me a lot of independence, trust, and creativity. It made me feel wanted and important at the Yacht Club.

What I wish was different

I do wish that I could have been up on my feet more and helped with other parts of the Club.

Advice

My advice is that it's important to speak up. Don't be afraid to give your input even if it's your first year somewhere. Your voice should always be heard and it can benefit not only the organization but yourself as an individual. I was happy that I expressed my concern with sustainability on the Club grounds because it led to my position as the Sustainaiblity Coordinator Intern halway through the summer in addition to my Retail position!

Sailing Coach

June - August 2018 • Bay Head, NJ

What I liked

I love the people and the sailing community. This was my 5th year working for Bay Head and I have greatly enjoyed the ability to hone my teaching skills, and pass on skills in the sport of sailing.

What I wish was different

I wish that the parents of the sailors did not have as much power as they presently do. As a coach, it is hard to both be strict, and then also have parents like you. Thus, there is a lot of politics that is required to maintain that balance.

Advice

Commit to doing good, hard work, not for human masters, but unto God. I was enthusiastically invited back every summer to teach at Bay Head Yacht Club, and was one of the senior members of the staff despite my youth. I believe this was because I brought a faith-based approach to my work that let me show up everyday in order to love God and love others. I believe this is applicable to all areas of work.
