Habilitation Technician

June - September 2018 • Wilkes Barre, PA

What I liked

I loved that I got a job in my field (psychology). Although working directly with children and adults with special needs is not exactly what I want to do for my career, it gave me some experience with the special needs community, and, in particular, moderate- severe autism. I met so many people through my job as well!

What I wish was different

I wish the family of the special needs adults/ children that I helped in home and community were a bit more respectful, and not as verbally destructive. I also wish my clinician manager was easier to reach, and more supportive.

Advice

If anyone is new to this field, or the special needs community in general, you must have patience, compassion, and empathy for the client, family, and situation. Often times when a client has a severe intellectual disability, the family is very stressed and may take it out on you. Though it’s difficult to handle, sometimes when in this field, you have to try not to take things personally.
