It was a great opportunity, and I would recommend the experience for anyone. One piece of advice would be to meet as many people as you can during the internship. Make connections and build friendships with other interns.

What I liked

I loved working for a non-profit organization whose mission is the same as mine—to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Not only do they treat their interns like employees, but they take time to fully teach you the ropes and help you grow as an individual. I found myself not just being challenged mentally in career skills, but also socially and spiritually. Every person I met seemed to live out their faith in a way that was both welcoming and comforting. This included a host family, which allowed me to live in Charlotte for free and become a part of their household. In addition, I made several lifelong friends with the other interns, and we enjoyed exploring Charlotte on the weekends. Ultimately, I found myself not wanting the internship to end and truly loved showing up to work daily—so much so that I returned to the organization and am now working their full-time.

What I wish was different

I would've loved to have had remote opportunities to continue helping out my team while finishing out my college education—almost like an extended internship option.

Advice

Don't hold back or be afraid to share your ideas—each person brings a unique perspective to the table. You only have three months in a new job or city, so just be yourself and embrace the opportunity.

What I liked

My internship at BGEA was an incredible and formative experience for me, both personally and professionally. BGEA provided me with meaningful work, gave me a seat in department meetings, and encouraged me to express my opinions to better the mission. I was given many opportunities to write for the ministry and see my work posted on their website. My co-workers and supervisor in the Internet Evangelism department were so hospitable and some of the most welcoming people I have ever met. After almost a year and a half, my co-workers still reach out and update me on the ministry. As an intern, I felt valued as a member of the team and in my writing.

What I wish was different

At BGEA, the employees are incredibly open to meeting with interns, even if they are in completely different departments. I wish that I had taken more advantage of this opportunity since it is rare to find prominent organizations with this kind of atmosphere. Planning ahead and meeting with various professionals can be a great way to learn about career opportunities, make great connections, and receive advice!

Advice

Soak in every experience, from the time you interview to the last day for the internship! Each part of this internship will build you professionally. Also, be teachable! Do not be scared to ask questions and ask for your supervisor's feedback.

Guest Services Intern

May - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

At the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the mission is the main goal. Everything centers around the Gospel. I was so pleased with the adherence to the core values that we learned within our first week of the internship. As an intern, I was honored to work on valuable projects in the ministry that became a springboard for future work opportunities.

What I wish was different

My internship at the Billy Graham Library was an incredible experience. I wouldn't change one thing about the program.

Advice

Prioritize the Gospel in all things and in every task and you will fit in well. Always keep Jesus as the main focus.

Video Ministry Services Intern

May - August 2015 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I had the honor of being part of one of the first waves of interns at BGEA. I was impressed with the professionalism, hospitality, education, and passion exhibited throughout my 3 months. My department took me in immediately and let me work side-by-side with people in all parts of Video Ministry Services and allowed me to gain some extremely valuable hands-on experience.

What I wish was different

While I was extremely grateful for my host family and the friendship that we created during my time in Charlotte, I think that pairing interns with people from the department they work in (as tricky as that might be to coordinate) would have been a little more beneficial. Personally, I think being able to understand the real-life time commitment that being in the media world requires would have been great to understand and grasp during my internship by living with someone who worked in my department.

Advice

It can be easy to enter into an internship after 4 years of hearing that it's all about you, your future, your goals, and your success, with a bit of an ego and sense of entitlement. My only advice is simple. BGEA is full of people who love the Lord, love to serve, have so many years of experience in the professional world, and are ready to walk along side you as you learn, grow, and are challenged. Listen to them and apply the wisdom they give you. Walk humbly, love God and love people and I guarantee your internship experience will be an unforgettable chapter.

ASL intern

May - August 2020 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I was hired to be the ASL intern at BGEA this past summer. However, due to Covid, the internships was canceled and I was never able to do it. Although this was the case, the interview process was such a good experience, as I was able to share my love and admiration for the BGEA and all the work it is doing. Everyone I interviewed with at the BGEA was so encouraging and made the interviewing process so comfortable. They really cared to know me and what made me interested in the internship. This is such an amazing ministry and it has impacted my life in so many ways. I am thankful for the experience I received interviewing and connecting with the BGEA and SP staff.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was that I would have been able to go in person and do the internship. I am very passionate about Sign Language and the Deaf culture and to be able to minister and share the gospel with them was something I was so excited about.

Advice

If you are interested in BGEA and the work they are doing, apply to work here! Even though Covid caused my internship to be canceled, I am still thankful I went through the process of applying and being offered the position. The staff at SP and BGEA have been trained so well to listen to you and find out what makes you interested in the program and serving God in this way.

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with and the job itself. Everyone was very supportive and cooperative with each other, and it was a blessing to get to serve the people visiting the library.

What I wish was different

I can't think of anything I would have wanted to be different.

Advice

This isn't just a job. It's an opportunity to serve Christ by loving the visitors and your fellow workers, sharing the gospel, and praying for people. You have to be ready to go above and beyond just doing your job.
