Bird Conservancy of the Rockies

Field Technician

May - July 2019 • Fort Collins, CO

What I liked

I really liked everything about this job. I enjoyed the on your own feeling. It gave me time to think and relax. I also liked the people which I worked with, they were very knowledgeable and good people to be friends with. But I liked the camping and traveling to amazingly beautiful places the most.

What I wish was different

I wish that my crew leader had been a little more accessible to us technicians. As we were stationed in the Northern Great Plains and he was in Fort Collins, CO.

Advice

I think that the greatest piece of advice for someone in this field would to try to stay as calm as possible and make decisions with a clear mind and not panic over everything. It seems very difficult to stay calm but if you don't think to hard about the future and adjust to what is going on in that moment, you will succeed.

Wildlife Biologist

March - July 2018 • Fort Collins, CO

What I liked

Learning over 800 birdsongs for over 600 species of songbirds

What I wish was different

Not having to enter so much data, not having to wake up at 2:30 in the morning after barely sleeping due to crazy thunderstorms on the prairie where I was camping.

Advice

Know your worth, ask a lot of questions, take risks in jobs. You can always quite a job you don't like, but you might really enjoy something way out of your planned field just by trying it out!
