BlackRock

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was able to learn how real world software engineering works, I was treated as a full time employee and was given really challenging projects. I was also encouraged to find innovative solutions to the problems that I was given, which ended up allowing me to use incredible open-source projects. There was a lot more collaboration than I thought there would be, it wasn't just people staring at a screen in a office, the office had low walls and big screens, there were a lot of meetings and mid afternoon discussions about the best way of solving something.

What I wish was different

I wish that instead of a 10-week internship, it was a 12-week one. It was also quite difficult to get the ball rolling, once I got in my team, there were a lot of things that I needed to learn, and it was very difficult to get situated at the start because of that. I also wish that I more carefully picked where I lived.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, good questions or stupid questions, that will make you get better at your job faster and solve your problems faster. Just don't ask it twice, make sure you write the answer down.

There was not a lot of stress to be the best and everyone was super helpful. I was able to learn a lot without feeling bad that I wasn't contributing as much.

Advice

The best part of the internship is meeting new people and networking. Make sure to spend time doing that and reaching out.

Contingent worker

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Liked working in a office because I’ve never had that experience before. Up until this summer I always worked with my dad at his condo building.

What I wish was different

I wish I was working more closely with the vice chairman because it would have given me a better look at what I should expect going into the business world.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to talk to everyone and don’t seclude yourself from others just because you’re new and don’t feel comfortable.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2023 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Great managers and team. Networking events with interns and full-time employees. Get useful software engineering experience while working on a project we got to demo at the end of the summer. Ping pong table and xbox in office. Free food usually at least once a week. Good compensation.

What I wish was different

3 day orientation was kind of long. Onboarding (getting laptop setup with everything needed to start writing code) could be a lot smoother.

Advice

Getting the offer is the hardest part. Work hard and enjoy your summer.

Summer Analyst

July - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Although virtual, this internship offered many different ways to learn about the company as well as perform as an individual with different assignments and weekly presentations. They then wrapped the whole internship up with a project that brought everything we had learned into one fluid cycle in which we got a full understanding of the BlackRock business.

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person, but due to the pandemic unfortunately it was virtual.

Advice

Take good notes and take the extra time out of your day to reach out to people in the company to pick their brain and learn more about the people of the company too.

Summer analyst

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the responsibility and the culture. It was expected that we stayed there as long as the analysts did and worked on their projects. At the same time, interns could ask or bring up any sort of input if I would be a positive contribution to the team.

What I wish was different

Once we were accepted to our area of the business, we were thrown into 2 different sections without our input. I wish we had gotten to choose.

Advice

Don't be afraid to make mistakes. One thing that was very much looked down on was stagnancy.

Loved the culture at BlackRock. I felt very welcomed even though I was a summer analyst and always felt supported by my peers. I learned so much and everyone was extremely supportive of my personal growth.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more summer analysts on my team. I worked on a smaller team so I happened to be the only one, but I was still able to connect with the other summer analysts across the firm.

Advice

If applying to BlackRock I would encourage focusing on collaboration since it was such a key part of my summer experience.
