What I liked

Flexible hours and staff is easy to work with. Being in the medical field, you get different experiences each time. You learn new things as you go and can be cross-trained in certain skills.

What I wish was different

More available staff--due to COVID, the staff is short-handed and can be overworked. Management is decent but turnover is probable.

Advice

Customer service is a must in this field. Clients can be tough, yet very emotional--so learn to adapt.

What I liked

I had a lot of hands-on learning opportunities with veterinary technicians and veterinarians. I felt very supported and comfortable.

What I wish was different

I wish that the pay/hours could have been better. Shifts were 10-12 hours long and could be mostly grunt work such as laundry and cleaning.

Advice

It is worthwhile looking into entry-level jobs with training opportunities rather than traditional internships. The pay can be better and there are many opportunities to learn new skills.

Veterinary Assistant Intern

What I liked

I absolutely loved the community of the doctors and technicians at the hospital. Everyone was so kind and accepting. They were also very active in educating me while performing their jobs. I also enjoyed seeing the unique cases that came through the door. There was something new everyday.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

You will never know what veterinary medicine truly is until you are working hands-on in the field.

What I liked

I liked the ease of entry into the facility. I believe that management truly cared that I was there. I was appreciated by other employees. I really appreciated that they were accommodating toward my school schedule and that I am welcome back to work during my school breaks. I also appreciated that they provide a call-in pay for when you are called in.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the schedule was a little different, there are slight inconsistencies but it was overall consistent. I do wish that relief assistants/employees were offered benefits. Although I was a "relief" assistant, I regularly worked the same hours and I didn't receive benefits like I feel I should have.
