Awesome company/culture/fellow interns! Interesting work and feels like you're making an impact. Also, the recruiting team does a fantastic job putting on fun events

What I wish was different

This is the nature of consulting, but I really only saw my fellow interns on Fridays and weekends--but, I still was able to get to know them quite well!

Advice

Business Intelligence Intern

June 2017 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The exposure to a high-functioning and prestigious company, and the ability to gain experience in a field that I had never really understood before. Ability to ask my manager and director above him questions, and the chance to sit in on team meetings and understand the scope of the project on a empirical level.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a little more structure and guidance, or a cohort of some sort. I felt a little wayward at times because I did not have peers with whom I could connect with.

Advice

Be super proactive and ask questions early on in your internship, because that's the only time where it's completely acceptable to know nothing at all. Try and get up to speed as quickly as possible and build your connections with people on your team early to establish a relationship with them, because that will be your only chance to establish a precedence. Don't be afraid to ask someone to grab lunch or coffee. Be visible. Be the first one in the office and last one to leave, even though you're an intern, and enthusiastic about doing any kind work that people may have you do and take it as a learning and growth opportunity.

Summer Associate

June - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

Given a lot of responsibility from day 1. I was in a very supportive environment, where everyone helped one another. There were many intern focused events that allowed the interns to meet more people in the office.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more summer associates. The smaller office made us close, but I wish there were more of us.

Advice

Start meeting people at one's target firm early. The employees will be more willing to give you time in their day, and you will come across as organized and ambitious. Also always try to find a smooth and non-transnational way to get the most recent person you talked with to refer you to someone else.

Associate

June - September 2018 • Denver, CO

What I liked

BCG gave me the best mentorship and transparent feedback that I’ve had at any company. I spent my summer on a pro bono project to improve Denver and got to work directly with CEOs and other executives from our client companies. My team was a bit unconventional, just me and a Principal, but he was an incredible mentor and I learned so much, especially coming in with zero Excel experience. The office was tight-knit and they planned great events for the interns pretty much weekly.

Case Team Assistant

May - June 2019 • Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

What I liked

(1) I appreciated the professional working environment. We were working in a team of around 10 people. All of my teammates were smart people who graduated from top universities worldwide. The team was also diverse as we had members coming from other BCG branches. The team was working very professionally. Everyone treated their tasks very seriously -- always delivered them on time. The tasks were assigned logically and evenly. My direct "manager," even though was busy with her tasks, still gave me guidance and support throughout the process (as I was totally new to the company). I also got to meet our client in meetings, which taught me a lot about being professional. (2) BCG paid well and treated their employees well. Salaries at BCG, of course, are among the highest. They also provided budgets for necessary daily expenses and other work-related ones. I only needed to focus on working hard. The company also organized weekly bonding activities that CTAs can also join. The team also had some cozy get-together celebrations as we reached each milestone. At the end of the case, each CTA received a short personal reflection and feedback section, which I really appreciated. We also received small gifts and farewell cards from our teammates/managers.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time working there. My case was only one-month long, which was, to me, a bit short. However, one month at BCG taught me more than I could ever imagine.

Advice

From my own experience, the responsibility of a case team assistant varies depending on each case. However, in general, the assistant needs to be flexible -- being able to do many tasks like researching, cold-calling, translating, cleaning/analyzing data, creating Powerpoint slides, using Tableau, or even other administrative tasks like arranging meeting rooms, etc. The assistant should also adopt the say-yes attitude as well as a professional manner.
