Boston Medical Center

Intern

May - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I got exposure to the many projects of the Autism Program - one on teen mentoring and one on improving the hospital experience for patients with ASD. I also serve on an Advisory Council and this had led me to making connections from people all over the country.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more ways to get involved in the project on improving the hospital experience. Making phone interviews was great but I wish there were more active ways to get involved.

Advice

The position is unpaid and it may seem like you’re not doing much but it all boils down to what you make out of it. See this as an opportunity to learn more about the projects. If there are talks or trainings go to them. This is all a learning experience.

Patient Access Representative

June 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

This experience was an amazing look into the administrative side of health care. As much as I want to be a doctor and work in medicine, I think having this position opened my eyes to all of the work that goes into medicine behind the scenes. I worked primarily in the referral department under the executive director and learned a tremendous amount of information about patient care, insurance processes, and much more. I think that everyone who is interested in medicine and health care should have at least some experience working in the administrative side of health care! I learned so much!

What I wish was different

Nothing - this internship and position was everything that I could have asked for and more!

Advice

I would highly recommend working with those who are in health care but not with patients - seeing all of the work that goes into charting, referrals, billing, direction of a primary care office, and more was so eye opening to the amount of work that goes into allowing doctors to practice medicine. I think that it really taught me how collaborative the medicine/health care field is, and certainly made me appreciate all of those who do work in health care but not with patients!

Nurse Intern

August - December 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I liked that I get to shadow a respectable nurse, but also get to perform jobs that the nurse would perform under her guidance. As my internship has progressed, I’ve had a lot of independence and feel better about soon becoming a nurse.

What I wish was different

I am still currently at my internship as of now and feel as though there is nothing in particular I’d change. I’ve had a lot of great learning experiences and have no complaints.

Advice

I recommend that all students going on internship go in with confidence. You have learned so much at this point and now it’s time to show that in the work setting and still continue to learn.
