Camp Counselor

May - July 2019 • Chimayo, NM

What I liked

I loved interacting with other camp staff, but especially with the scouts that came. Talking to their scout leaders was also interesting. Getting to teach scouts different skills, and watching them enjoy it, was very rewarding.

What I wish was different

Being paid more for the work that was done would have been nice, especially because it was a high stress working environment. Also if there had been more clarity on what to expect while working there, the job would have been a bit easier to handle.

Advice

Some advice I could give from having this job is to take care of yourself if you’re under high amounts of pressure. This job was rewarding, but it was also incredibly stressful. Without taking proper care of yourself, getting sleep, staying hydrated, and taking advantage of days off, it could quickly and completely drain you. So taking care of yourself is very important if you want to succeed through pressure.

Scout Master

September 2017 • Stoughton, WI

What I liked

Everything! I went through scouts and earned my Eagle scout in 2016. I'm currently on my 11th year with the Boy Scouts in total and it's great being an adult figure for the scouts.

What I wish was different

I wish I had shown up more. I worked occasionally during scout meetings and I could have done my best to take off work during these meetings.

Advice

It's totally worth being around any scouts. Knowing you can have some sort of an impact on others' lives and just doing your best to help others is great.

Children are the future, no matter if you’re teaching them to swim or helping them learn STEM subjects, they will remember you for a long time and you can put a spark in them that could light the fires of the future.

What I liked

It was a wonderful experience getting out in nature for summer on the mountain with people I knew, and people I did not. We made an excellent team and the scouts seemed to have a really great time and learned a lot. It was a very rewarding experience, not only for the time outside, but also being able to teach about various STEM skills and watch the scouts learn.

Assistant Program Director

June 2017 • Pipersville, PA

What I liked

Interacting in the outdoors is something that I have always loved as a kid but unfortunately growing up in New York City I don't have much access to enjoy nature. Going to this camp is literally a breath of fresh air, being able to look at the stars overnight, meeting new staff and thousands of campers and being a mentor to them is very rewarding in of itself.

What I wish was different

I wish that I lived closer to the camp because of how much i love the community and my friends I made at this camp. I love spending my summer there and can't imagine doing anything else during my time.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about my experience is that you have to keep an open mind. This experience when first told about doesn't seem to be "the best". Nobody really enjoys camping nowadays, especially in the woods of Pennsylvania for the entire summer, however the friends you make, the memories you share, it is incomparable.
