Tax Intern

June - August 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Everyone was so patient and answered all my questions in depth. If there were a question that they could not answer, they would find someone that could & I loved that!

What I wish was different

The only thing I wished was different was just an extended internship.

Advice

Communication is key! During the internship, I learned from the mentors that there's no such thing as over-communicating. Be ready to ask questions and have fun with it!

Assurance Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed the audit practice--starting a career in audit can really help build a strong business foundation and support any possible future endeavors you'd be interested in. The company was extremely accommodating and put in the effort to teach you the technical expertise. I highly recommend for accounting students to check out BPM and what they have to offer--they are a talented, knowledgeable, and fun group of people to work with.

What I wish was different

The internship was in their headquarters, which is in San Francisco. I really loved exploring a new city and being apart of the fast paced city life. With that said, I wish my company had an office located in LA so I could work for them while still being close to my family/hometown. I wouldn't change anything about the actual internship experience itself.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give to a student interested in a career in public accounting is to consider looking for companies other than the big 4. While those companies are awesome and provide great experience, I truly believe many of the mid-size and smaller firms pay off in a unique experience. If you are a student who appreciates the size and intimacy of USD (student population/class sizes), then you would most likely also fit into a firm that is smaller and more intimate. Plus, working on smaller clients (which are still big, multi million dollar revenue companies) will allow you to experience a more holistic view on the audit. You can appreciate the work from the planning phase, through fieldwork, and finally concluding on post-fieldwork assignments. As mentioned earlier, Big 4 is a great opportunity and should not be undervalued; however, it is also very beneficial to gain experience from other smaller firms.
