Breakthrough Atlanta

Teaching Fellow

May - July 2023 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Intentional varying levels of support, and admin respond quickly / genuinely care. My Instructional Coach was super organized and a great resource. I appreciated the efforts admin made around professional development and leadership opportunities. And I miss my kids, they're all smart and funny in their own ways. Also, breakfast and lunch being included is huge.

What I wish was different

As someone who had no prior experience of/education around teaching before the job, there were times where I felt that I was set up to survive, not to succeed. For example, orientation did not include training on differentiated instruction (though it was covered in PD about 3/4 of the way into the program), and had limited emphasis around classroom management.

Advice

Go into the day going with the flow. Sometimes you and other Teaching Fellows may not know what is going on logistically the morning of special event days. If you propose an elective you genuinely want chosen, be as thorough as possible in lesson plans / set up early! You will not have time during the workday to plan much once classes start.
