Breakthrough Cincinnati

AmeriCorps VISTA

June 2019 - July 2020 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

The mission and the values of the organization aligned with mine so I was able to work with passion and make an impact. There was also plenty of work that could be done remotely.

What I wish was different

Since this is an AmeriCorps position, the living stipend given is not a salary - months later, I am still facing the financial consequences of this experience. I applied for SNAP and was approved around February, which was more than halfway through my service year - I wish I applied earlier.

Advice

It is incredibly difficult financially.

Teaching Fellow

June - August 2018 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I was able to directly interact with people who had passions similar to mine and I built connections with some amazing middle schoolers.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been better diversity training, given the background of the teaching fellows in comparison to that of the students we taught.

Teaching Fellow

May - August 2018 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I loved having an opportunity to teach and to learn more about education. I had a wonderful time getting to know my coworkers, but I truly loved my students and watching them grow.

What I wish was different

My supervisors did not treat us very professionally, and I wish they had communicated their expectations more in advance and been more transparent with us.

Advice

If anyone else is interested in working for Breakthrough Cincinnati, I would advise them to make sure they have the time and emotional resources to devote themselves almost entirely to the job. It's rewarding, but demanding, and can be grueling if you're not prepared.
