Breakthrough Santa Fe

Teaching Fellow

June - July 2020 • Santa Fe, NM

What I liked

Breakthrough Santa Fe consists of an exquisitely accepting community and an extensive beginning teaching environment. I learned essential strategies for teaching that I will employ in my future teaching.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID-19, Breakthrough Santa Fe was an online program. Thus, it did not have the extent of personal connection that Breakthrough usually has. There was some difficulty with student motivation and community building, but I saw the Breakthrough community (specified above in what I enjoyed in this internship) generally present. Most students wished to learn, but there were exceptions.

Advice

This is not an easy job, as is routine with teaching. I would suggest to start work very early and never begin procrastination. Teaching requires immense amounts of work, and the online experience required more effort towards building community.

Advice

The hardest job I’ve ever had, but also the best. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
