Breakthrough Silicon Valley

About Breakthrough Silicon Valley

Breakthrough Silicon Valley launches talented but underserved middle school students on the path to college, while at the same time inspiring high school and college students to become educators. While ambitious in our goals, BTSV works: a stunning 99% of BTSV graduates are accepted into four-year colleges and 74% of BTSV Teaching Fellows are inspired to pursue a career in education as a result of their summer experience.

BTSV’s tuition-free program provides year-round out of school time academic support, advising, and advocacy for a diverse group of talented students, most of whom come from under-resourced communities and are first in their family to go to college. Through our students-teaching-students model, BTSV also provides a consummate professional development experience in education by providing talented high school and college students the opportunity to design and teach classes under the direction of seasoned education professionals.

Located in San Jose, California, Breakthrough Silicon Valley is an affiliate of The Breakthrough Collaborative, a leading national service organization that acts as the national voice for 24 Breakthrough sites across the country.

“I enjoyed the hands on experience getting to interact and work alongside lower income middle school students. ”

Teaching Fellow

June 2019 - August 2019 San Jose, CA
“I really enjoyed being Teaching Fellow in Summer 2019 at the 9th-grade site. I taught High School Prep (2 classes) and Digital Media Arts: Yearbook (1 class) and my classes had around 10-13 students. Working with the students, program staff and my colleagues was the absolute best part of this job. Breakthrough SV does an amazing job of instilling a strong sense of community, spirit, and support. There were all sorts of different activities including icebreakers, ASM (all school meetings), skits, rallies, spirit competitions, volunteering, community building, and more! I also really enjoyed teaching fellow orientation because it equipped me with the skills and knowledge to apply to my teaching practices. We had a lot of creative freedom when it came to lesson planning and different classroom activities. For my digital media arts elective class, my students worked together to create a yearbook for the summer program. I was able to teach students about creative design thinking, basic introductory photography, and digital design using Canva. As teaching fellows, we collaborated with our departments to support one another. My colleagues are the best and we would always lesson plan together. We also had a lot of energy and would spread positivity to the rest of our summer site staff. One of the greatest things about this experience is that it really helped me to figure out if a career in education is right for me. I am passionate about working to advance the field of education, but I am still exploring which types of positions I would like to pursue in the future. Breakthrough gives aspiring educators, who are high school and college students, hands-on real-world teaching experiences. It is a rigorous position, but a worthwhile and memorable learning experience.”
