Breakthrough Twin Cities

Teaching Fellow

May - August 2023 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I really appreciated the diversity of staff and Teaching Fellows at Breakthrough Twin Cities! Teaching Fellows were from multiple countries and numerous colleges around the United States, which made space for the multitude of pedagogical practices students have seen and participated in extremely diverse and able to support studies best. The hands-on teaching experience and feedback from instructional coaches was also essential to my growth, and I am so thankful for the support of the organization.

What I wish was different

I wish the transportation plans and accessibility to my specific Teaching Fellow site was better. If I did not have a car, I would not have been able to finish my Teaching Fellowship.

Advice

Be ready and excited to be challenged daily and grow in your experience!

Teaching Fellow

June - August 2018 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

This position gave me a lot of experience in a number of different dimensions of teaching (in classroom, out of classroom, curriculum planning, adapting material, working with department). The community at BTC is wonderful.

What I wish was different

It was often overwhelming and overstimulating, and it was very difficult to take breaks during the day.

Advice

Don't expect to make a deeply meaningful bond with every student. The students are great, but you won't connect with all of them, especially not right away. I found it difficult to form bonds with students, and I think that's just how it is for some people.
