Camp Mystic

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Hunt, TX

What I liked

Getting to work with the campers who taught me just as much as I taught them.

What I wish was different

Legitimately nothing, this was one of the best experiences of my life.

Advice

Commit to bringing your A game every morning and take it day by day.

What I liked

Great training and job orientation. Very personal, family environment, with lots of personal support for the counselors. Very generous with time-off, but high expectations for performance when you are working.

What I wish was different

Although this wasn't a problem for me, you are not allowed to have your phone or laptop while you are on camp grounds (although you can bring them for nights/days off). This is very strictly inforced. However, there is a breakroom, where you have occasional access to Netflix/desktops.

Advice

A background in Christianity is definitely advisable for this position, as this is a camp revolving around Christian values, and you are responsible for leading nightly devotionals and participating in chapel services.

What I liked

I liked connecting with other Tech students who were also working here. I just love camp!

What I wish was different

I wish the camp wasn't so far away but they compensated me for travel.

Advice

Being a camp counselor is exhausting, but it's such a rewarding experience! Know what you're getting into before you commit.

What I liked

The people I worked with were beyond amazing and had the biggest heart. Working with kids 24/7 can be difficult, but Camp Mystic staff made sure I had all the tools and support I needed to succeed.

What I wish was different

My only wish would be if there was a bit more structure. Sometimes I felt lost for what to do and what was necessary, but at the same time I had a lot of fun and developed my quick thinking skills by having to come up with activities or solutions on the spot.

Advice

Get out of your comfort zone. Do something you've never done before and just give your all to what you are doing in that moment.
