Chesapeake Shakespeare Company

Directing Intern

May - July 2018 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

Chesapeake Shakespeare Company has a wonderful summer program. The summer project involved 8 acting interns, 1 directing intern, and a few technical interns to produce the play "Macbeth." There is so much hands-on experience. The employees at the company ensure that they include the interns at every angle, often taking suggestions from them. Additionally, Master Classes were held that taught interns about various elements of acting (these classes usually cost thousands of dollars). Moreover, the interns were able to assist with the professional production occurring. This experience gave everyone exposure to the professional acting world.

What I wish was different

The hours of the internship ran 5-10pm. Additionally, most weekend days were occupied with this training; however, the life of an actor is about rehearsing at weird times. There was no pay, which isn't preferible, but the experience gained was well worth it. Finally, it is expected that you do more than asked, even if it isn't in your job description.

Advice

If you're serious about pursuing theatre, this internship is fantastic. There is no pay, but the experience is well worth it. If you live around Hopkins, you can take the CHARM shuttle for free, so transportation costs are low. You make good friends who truly care for you. Overall, a wonderful experience.
