Teaching Assistant (Preschool, Elementary, Middle, and Secondary School)

May 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I love working with the children and helping them accomplish their goals.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more structure to the "behind the scenes" part of the day. While the kids have structure, the staff is often in a state of chaos due to the lack of a permanent leader.

Advice

Please, please, PLEASE think about if you really want to work with children if you go into a school setting. Many children (especially in the inner city) are dealing with various forms of trauma and they don't always know how to process it. Because of this, behavior, attendance, and grades can all suffer. Its important to have patience and the ability to be mindful of what they had to endure before they entered the school.

Project Assistant Intern

June 2017 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I liked how flexible the hours were!

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a better group of interns to work with. I was responsible for alot of day to day operations that needed to be completed and alot of the interns that were in the office were not engaging!

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up and ask for help. An internship is the time where you are learning how to do new things especially in a professional environment
