City of Cleveland

Play director

May - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I absolutely loved working for the city, and interacting with the children on a personal level. You become a role model to these kids. As a play director, you are the most important person in your children’s life at that time. You’re creating a safe environment for your kids to be themselves and or escape whatever maybe happening in their everyday lives.

What I liked

I liked being able to work toward economic development goals the city is pursuing in an attempt to lift up all its residents, and strengthen its economic health going forward. It's a big, important effort and one I was proud to be part of.

What I wish was different

I perhaps would have liked to avoid some of the bureaucratic politics and logjams that, while certainly to some extent inherent in government, seemed especially prominent and sclerotic at the city.

Advice

As in all public service jobs, it's important to seek out an experience in which you can invest and one that you find to be fulfilling. That's why I was motivated, really motivated to work well: I know I was having a substantive impact on people's lives.
