Biochemistry Research Assistant

June - August 2021 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed learning new laboratory techniques and gaining independence in the research lab.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a bit more success with my experiments, but that of course is contingent on the living bacteria that we are working with.

Advice

I would advise any students majoring in a STEM area to consider and apply for a similar position, as it is a great opportunity to learn and grow research skills.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I got hands on research experience in a lab under the guidance of a professor. There was also a great community with the research students over the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish the research carried into the school year.

Advice

Be ready to learn! There are so many things that can only be taught in a lab setting, a classroom is a good foundation but in the lab is where you get the invaluable work experience.

Parent Orientation Leader

June 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed working with the other students on the team to create and execute a dynamic and engaging orientation program for incoming first-year students and their families.

What I wish was different

Genuinely, I would not change anything.

Advice

Apply to be a summer orientation leader, even if you're not sure you can commit! Apply just to have the option -- I applied as a "backup plan" for this past summer but ended up really enjoying it!

Summer Orientation Leader

June 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I really loved being able to connect with other Holy Cross students, and getting so close with people who I may have not otherwise met.

What I wish was different

It can be hard work, but there really is not much that I would change.

Advice

Being an orientation leader is an experience that is so limited to doing in a college setting. I knew I would not have the opportunity to do something like this once I left college, so I was really glad I took the time to do it.

Weiss Summer Research Program Researcher

June - July 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

Learning how to research on my own and how to go about writing a lengthy research paper.

What I wish was different

I wish the program had ended a bit earlier in the summer. I had to continue working on my paper even after the end of the program which I did not expect and which affected the rest of my summer plans.

Advice

Plan your time carefully so that you finish on schedule, and enjoy working with your advisor!

Admissions Tour Guide

June 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I love being a tour guide and having the opportunity to talk about my college. I really valued being able to share my experiences and talk about all the school has to offer in hopes of helping other students make their decision. My favorite part was having parents come up to me with their children asking questions after the tour and being able to give out my contact information if they had further questions. I also got a very cute personal handwritten letter from someone on my tour which really took the cake this summer.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have been able to connect more with some parents and prospective students. There were some tours I had where different topics would be mentioned and I wish I had more time to go more in-depth. I also wish that I had gotten the job sooner that way I could spend more time in admissions but I had to share hours between admissions and my other job.

Advice

One piece of advice I'd give about this experience is to always be yourself and not make accommodations that are detrimental to you. Not everyone is going to be the fondest of you due to their own backgrounds but all you can do is continue to be yourself and hope others can see that.

Advice

For those looking to do graduate school within the hard sciences, undergraduate research is a key experience to gain exposure to actual research. This helps one determine if they enjoy research, and makes them a more valuable candidate to graduate schools.
