Davis School District

Teacher Assistant

December 2021 - August 2022 • Layton, UT

What I liked

I liked that my job was flexible and I could lower or up my hours depending on what was going on during the month. The kids were usually really good and it was a good job!

What I wish was different

I wish the parents of the kids I worked with would have been more responsible about some things, that was definitely a challenge

Advice

Get a job that's flexible! Life gets crazy and if it isn't flexible, it's going to be a big challenge

Custodian

October 2017 - August 2018 • Layton, UT

What I liked

I loved the flexible hours and being able to come in after school and get my work done. The teachers who stuck around were always nice and helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work more closely with others. As a night custodian I worked by myself on one end of the building.

Advice

I think everyone at one time or another should have experience with janitorial jobs. It makes you a better person, thinking twice before you make a mess or ruin someone elses property and walk away from it.

Part time custodian

May 2018 • Kaysville, UT

What I liked

It is a great college job. Not too many hours. I do not have to think too hard about my work while I am attending school. My employers know and realize that I am a student and are more than willing to work with me on my schedule when I am busy or my classes are at different times than work, so the schedule can be flexible as long as I accomplish my responsibilities at work.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunities to work in my career field applicable areas. I do learn quite a few of on the job things that I have been able to relate to my coursework, but I want more of those opportunities.

Advice

This is hard work that can be tedious at times. If you can not get dirty, or cannot handle the sometimes brainless types cleaning and maintenance types of activities, do not do this job. It can be really fun and rewarding a lot of the time. It is only a part-time job though, so do not be expecting to work a ton of hours on a regular basis. I have worked in Custodial for a long time to pay for school and other bills. It does meet my needs in my busy schedule.

Crew Lead

June 2013 - August 2019 • Clearfield, UT

What I liked

This is mowing lawns for Davis School District. It is really easy to get days off. It has a flexible start and end date. You get to be outside in the sun. You get a good work-out. The crews are generally pretty laid back. They give you a raise every year you come back. The equipment is fun to work with.

What I wish was different

Every once in a while there was drama that could have easily been avoided. Some of the bosses are a little bossy.

Advice

If you allergic to grass, don´t apply.

Substitute School cook

December 2017 • Syracuse, UT

What I liked

Although the pay is low, I enjoy many of the cooks I work with and the experience of working in the school system. I also have a lot of flexibility in my schedule and can choose how far I'm willing to go to substitute. I can also have a few months of a break for schooling and get work as soon as I return to Utah, when the need is there. Plus, if I ever decide I want to get hired by a school, it's not too hard to find a school willing to take you.

What I wish was different

Although I cannot control it, it would have been nice if I received more calls for work. Substitutes aren't needed as much during the summer and the beginning of the school year, so you won't get many hours in during this time. But there is a lot of work in the winter.

Advice

Just stay positive and work hard. As long as you do this, most schools are willing to hire you because there is a high demand for cooks.
