Eagle Village, Inc.

Youth Specialist

July 2020 • Hersey, MI

What I liked

Great experience working with at risk youth. Getting to know the youth was my favorite part.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more hours through my class schedule to work more. Coming in on only weekends made it hard to always know what was going on.

Advice

Always be open to feedback from fellow staff, and don't be afraid to ask questions on any little thing you want to know.

What I liked

I liked that my field instructor was kind, understanding, and willing to teach things that I wasn't so knowledgeable about.

What I wish was different

I wish it would have been paid instead of unpaid.

Advice

Always communicate with your field instructor what you need and expect from them while interning.

Camp Counselor

May 2019 • Hersey, MI

What I liked

I absolutely love this job. I am a Social Work major, so this job was right up my alley. We work with at risk kids. We work to give them a camp experience, and an opportunity to be successful, feel loved, and to just be kids.

What I wish was different

This summer I also studied abroad for a month in London (which was absolutely AMAZING), but in a way it took away from the work experience. I just wish I had been there for the full summer. Though don't get me work I in no way, shape, form, or fashion regret studying abroad. That was one of the best experiences of my life.

Advice

Whatever you decide to do with your summer or really any part of your life; just go in with an open heart and an open mind. Make the best of whatever it ends up being. You will always only get out of something what you put into it.

Summer Staff

May - August 2018 • Hersey, MI

What I liked

I was able to work with kids with a trauma background, or with behavioral challenges.

What I wish was different

I got into several situations with kids where I had to put them into holds in order to keep them, other people, and myself safe.

Advice

If you apply here, make sure that you are patient and compassionate, and that you are ready to learn a lot.

Youth Specialist/Camp Counselor Intern

June - August 2018 • Hersey, MI

What I liked

I loved being able to be apart of the children's camp experience and try to help guide them through some behavioral issues by being a positive role model.

What I wish was different

I wish there were not so many guest groups on the campus. The children we worked with sometimes created a high stress atmosphere. With the bands, sports teams, and other groups it would add onto the stress because it limited what the base camp could do.

Advice

Understanding the way some of trauma and neglected children act is learned behavior. The way they act and reason they do things is because they have learned to survive this way. It is never a child's fault. Being patient and always kind to them will make the world of a difference.
