Elder Research, Inc.

Software Engineer

June 2021 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

Working at Elder Research gave me the opportunity to spread my wings and develop software that contributes to the world in a way that I can be proud of. One of the projects I worked on was predictive maintenance for hydro-electric generators based on sensor data, and I got to contribute a non-insignificant amount to the infrastructure that brings the trained models to the real world.

Advice

Your coworkers are there to help you, and not being afraid to ask questions and being able to recognizing my strengths and weaknesses helped me solidify my understanding in so many other areas besides just programming.

Research and Development Data Scientist

June - August 2019 • Linthicum, MD

What I liked

I loved learning about everything from AI to developments in cryptology at the internship alongside four fellow interns. The experiences of a 9-5 desk job has highly prepared me for my hopeful future career. And the type of work involved helped me to narrow down my choice of major and field of interest. The community in the workplace was fantastic and I always felt encouraged to learn as much as possible and work hard.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known more going into the internship so that I could have further contributed to the projects I was involved in.

Advice

If I had any advice for my past self it would be to begin the internship with an open mind, understanding that my purpose was to learn as much as possible, even if it was humbling. There is no better way to grown in knowledge than through the cycle of mistakes and experience.
