Galileo Learning

Assistant Instructor (Camp Counselor)

June - August 2019 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I liked the environment of camp because it was very different from what goes on during the school year. It was a really fun experience and helped develop my leadership abilities. It also helps a lot with communication abilities.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to teach in more of the engineering-related classes because that was what I am passionate about. It is sometimes difficult to move between classes, and they do their best to match you up with the classes you want.

Advice

I commonly highlight this experience because it shows how I can be a strong leader, inspire the people I work with, and work well in a team setting.

Assistant Instructor

June - August 2019 • Mill Valley, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the staff at Galileo. They were very welcoming and helpful as I was a new staffer. I also really enjoyed working with a new group of children each week.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more training on my position. There are only a few AI at each site, so the training is not that heavy for AI.

Advice

You really need to get into the Galileo spirit to make the most of this job. Don't fight it, join it.

Summer Intern

June - August 2019 • Orinda, CA

What I liked

Working at Galileo Summer Camp was a great experience. The atmosphere was always positive, and I always felt like I could go to my superiors or coworkers for help. The work was hard, but always satisfying- there was always a feeling of having a real impact at camp.

What I wish was different

As a summer intern, I sometimes felt expendable. Since there were a decent few people hired for the job, I was not working every week. This also meant that every week the mix of interns was not equally trained/ proficient. This decreased as the summer went along, however.

Advice

Be aware that this is an active, hands-on job that rewards taking initiative. If you are looking for a secure, steady, weekly income, this may not be the right job for you. If you are looking for a little summer cash and a fun experience, this is the right job for you.

Summer Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • Orinda, CA

What I liked

I loved the collaboration between the kids and the team leaders. Everyone had a great attitude and it made a great experience for those around them.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more involvement between the interns and the rest of the team. Many times I felt excluded from the rest of the group and several other interns had similar feelings.

Advice

I would make sure you know the hours of your role and the assigned weeks you're scheduled to work, because you might not be scheduled to work every week.

Advice

Apply for any position you think you are suited for, even if you don’t meet all the expectations. And be clear on scheduling, they are very flexible as long as you tell them your conflicts in advance. And enjoy it, because those kids are amazing and the future of the world. 6 weeks isn’t long enough.
