What I liked

It was a good job, they were very helpful, gave me the resources I needed to exceed and offered support every step of the way

What I wish was different

The growth in the position, it starts off making good money, but there is not much growth.

Advice

If you do not mind working off of Linux, like doing some cool work with submarines and working in an office setting, you will like this job! Also working in C++

Systems Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Groton, CT

What I liked

A great view at a previously unknown branch of engineering (Systems Engineering) was able to travel to all three locations and work weekly at another location to grow experience with a wide range of projects.

What I wish was different

COVID-19 made the job a little different and there were not many employees working on site, because of COVID I feel I did not get the full experience.

Advice

If you are not given enough work or are bored at work don't wait for more work to come your way, get out on the floor and talk to as many people as you can and offer to help them with their projects. Spend your downtime reading over available materials and really learning about the company.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • North Kingstown, RI

What I liked

Great pay, flexible hours, own space to work

What I wish was different

I wish I got more relevant work that correlated with my major or engineering in general. I was given no engineering tasks the whole summer and did not apply anything that I have learned in school. There was also very little work for me to do leaving me bored trying to fill up my day on my own.

Advice

To make sure that your possible employer for your internship has projects lined up for you to work on.

Civil Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • New London, CT

What I liked

Fast pace work environment that challenged my engineering skill-set and taught me much about one of the many paths I can take with my major

What I wish was different

The daily work routine was a little monotonous and trivial. Definitely felt like the day to day work stopped challenging me a month in and became very mind numbing.

Advice

Like any internship, try to take it as a chance to learn about your field and learn about what types of work you would like to do after you graduate. Some people think internships are an extended interview for the employer but I have always seen it as an interview of the working world and see where your skills would be best used and what line of work would make you the most happy.

What I wish was different

Advice

Learn everything you can! Always be ready to learn something new, and don’t be afraid to let them know if something is unfamiliar or new to you, I learned more about mechanical engineering and engineering as a whole in the few months that I was there than I have learned thus far at school. It was an awesome experience and I look forward to going back!

IT Security and Compliance Intern

July - August 2019 • Groton, CT

What I liked

I liked how involved they made me feel. I was brought to meetings, closed conversations, presentations, etc. Everything my department went to, I was allowed to go. I was given a lot of work, so there was very little downtime and I was always given opportunities to ask questions. I will be returning this winter, to work for the same department, due to the successful experience I had there this past summer.

What I wish was different

Something I wish that had been different was the location, it was a bit far from home and having a closer location would have been beneficial.

Advice

Something I would recommend to anyone going to this internship or any internship for that matter would be, to never fear in asking questions. Asking questions shows to your employer that you are paying attention, interested, and invested in your time there. Asking questions and being personal allowed me to meet some important people and gain some insight on what I may want to do when I graduate.
