General Mills

CPG Sales Intern

June - August 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

It was a hands-on experience that was challenging and invigorating. I was truly able to experience the company's culture to determine how my values aligned with those of the company.

What I wish was different

Due to the pandemic, the internship was virtual.

Advice

I would advise the intern to be prepared to learn, ask probing questions, and never doubt your potential as an intern because you are given very valuable work in this position to solve real-world problems.

Sales Intern

May - August 2020 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I loved how willing everyone was willing to meet with me throughout the summer. I felt like I was able to ask anyone questions and they were willing to answer anything. I also appreciated how flexible my boss was and how she made me feel like I was a valued member of the team.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to have worked in person out of the Minneapolis office, unfortunately, due to COVID, I had to work virtual. The company made the experience wonderful and I feel like I still go the full experience. It just would have been nice to network in person with the people on my team.

Advice

Take advantage of the opportunity to meet with those working for the company. I learned so much about what a full-time would look like and the different opportunities that would be available to me. I also got to know what my future colleagues were like, making it much easier to feel comfortable in my decision to accept a full-time position.

North American Retail Sales Intern

June - August 2020 • Rogers, AR

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to do meaningful work, that would have an impact on the business, and my team after my internship ended. They spent a fair amount of time training us on skills that we would all need, and then the unique things that we did not receive during training our teams did a great job of showing us what needed to be done. Everyone that I had the chance to interact with was extremely kind, helpful, and willing to take the time out of their schedule to meet with me to talk about work, personal life, their experiences, or anything I came to them with. They was a clear effort from the organization on making sure we all had the opportunity to understand the company culture. Additionally, they laid a foundation for having a strong support system around us through our mentors, managers and peers. We also had multiple opportunities to be exposed to senior leadership ranging all the way from our VPs and Directors in the office all way up to the CEO of the company.

What I wish was different

Just based on the nature of the situation, I wish it would'be been longer. They had to quickly adjust to a virtual format so they did not have the same amount of time to prepare for the incoming interns. Along with it being longer, I wish there would have been more hands on opportunities for projects. Talking to my manages after my experience, I know that would have been the case if they had more time to prepare or if the circumstances would have been normal.

Advice

If you're looking for somewhere to grow your skills while making a real impact on the business and feel like apart of the team, even though it's only for a short time. This is the place to do it.

Business Management Associate Intern

June - August 2019 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I loved the company culture. They gave me a unique project that greatly impacted the business. I was able to create my own schedule on a daily basis that allowed me to network and also complete my project to the best of my ability. They have amazing benefits.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to do more field selling during my role at headquarters. We did a trip to Dallas to practice our field selling, but I felt it was not long enough.

Advice

I would greatly encourage students to find a company that shares the same values as them. I loved my experience at General Mills because I share similar values and loved the culture. That is more important to me than the product I am selling.

Research and Development Engineer Intern

May - August 2017 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I was given real projects as if I were a full time hire. I worked amongst the full time engineers as an equal. They work really hard to welcome you and be available for help on your projects when you ask for help. The housing they put us in a great location. I had a blast with the other interns. They really hire great people and care about them immensely.

What I wish was different

I wish the training, networking events, and socials were front loaded instead of interspersed throughout the summer.

Advice

Plan your projects out right away at the beginning. The summer goes by fast and it is easy to get behind. Often timetables are affected by internal factors out of your control, so if you can plan ahead then it will be easier to deal with any setbacks.

Application Developer Intern

June - August 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

The work culture there was demanding yet very open. The HQ was a cool campus with features like restaurants, a company store, a cafeteria, the occasional giveaway (free yogurt or free boxes of cereal), a cereal bar, salon + more. The intern project I worked on wasn't just busy body work, but it was a project from my teams backlog.

What I wish was different

Advice

Network as much as possible and meet with many different types of people to understand what it's like to work full time and more specifically what it's like to work for the company.
